Cultural & Academic Films

This library of academic and cultural films features collections from the Academic Film Archive and the Media Burn Independent Film Archive, as well as a selection of documentaries created by Dorothy Fadiman. In addition, films from the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archeology and Anthropology are presented including those by Watson Kintner who used film to document his world travels, and the popular television show from the 1950s: “What in the World?”

First, is the visit by Gejus van Diggele who collects ball announcements printed or written on the backs of early playing cards. Mr. van Diggele is from the Neherlands. "Civil War Medical Care." Bob Ranftle of the Rutland Historical Society presents a brief overview of medical care in Vermont prior to the Civil War. During the Civil War problems in medical care led to major changes, many of which were led by Dr. Jonathan Letterman. Some Rutland doctors serving in the Civil War were also leaders in the changes. These are the original records of the Nickwackett Engine Company, which was housed in the same building that the historical society now occupies.  It includes log books 1860 - 1895, Fires and Alarms 1876 - 1879, and Members and Dues.  The records were donated by the Austin family, whose ancestors were members and officers of the Nickwackett Engine Company during this period.

This set of copies of Smoke and Blazes is donated to the Rutland Historical Society in memory of my parents, Mary and Craigue Perkins and my aunt, Vera Perkins. They conceived the idea for a Killington Section newsletter in 1948 and served as editors and publishers for thefirst several years of its existence, cutting stencils, and running mimeograph copies in our living room. “The Fallow Field” is a collection of poems by Julia C. R. Dorr.  The work was published posthumously in 1893 by Lee and Shepard Publishers of Boston.    This work is most notable for its beautiful l illustrations (in Charcoal) that were done by her daughter Zulma De Lacy Steele.
