Jim Davidson hosts Michael Dwyer in a program exploring the information that can be gleaned from a photo of the late 19th or the early 20th Century. Photos, both posed and unposed, can offer great amounts of information about ordinary life at the turn of the 19th to the 20th Century if one knows how to go about. This program helps to fill this gap in our knowledge.

Jim Davidson interviews Roger Bailey, coordinator of Vermont History Expo 2004's co-operative Mining and Quarrying Exhibit. New York Giants vs. Rutland All-Stars - 1916. Dick Leyden, Vermont baseball historian, discusses the baseball game at the Rutland Fairgrounds on 22 October 1916. This game was played during the "deadball era" when pitchers were able to "doctor" the ball in many ways and only one ball was used for the whole game. Thus home runs were few and far between. Dick's presentation provides a wealth of information on the participants and background on baseball in this era. The Rutland...

Cataloging on this item notes "many by Colin MacKenzie" with regards to this image. As MacKenzie was only active as a photographer from about 1903-1911, this is likely later than "ca. 1900" if this is indeed one of his images.

This episode discusses water as a power source, as a short-lived canal idea, as an essential for personal use and its role in recreation. The program also deals with the development of water and sewer systems and the current issues caused by the aging water and sewer systems, many over 100 years old.

"Public Safety". Jim Davidson of the Rutland Historical Society talks about the history of crime in Rutland and the protection from crime, particularly theft. Crimes of violence were infrequent. Protection from crime was pretty much in the hands of the county sheriff. As the population grew, so did crime. In the 1880s a village police force performed the police function. As the city of Rutland was organized a small full-time police force was employed. The program also talks about the...
