During the last two weeks of January 1975 Buckminster Fuller gave an extraordinary series of lectures concerning his entire life's work. These thinking out loud lectures span 42 hours and examine in depth all of Fuller's major inventions and discoveries from the 1927 Dymaxion house, car and bathroom, through the Wichita House, geodesic domes, and tensegrity structures, as well as the contents of Synergetics. Autobiographical in parts, Fuller recounts his own personal history in the context of...

When Abortion Was Illegal: Untold Stories illuminates a largely undocumented era, from the end of the 19th century through the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision in 1973. This Academy Award-nominated film features compelling first person accounts, which reveal the physical, legal, and emotional consequences during the era when abortion was a criminal act. Until recently, the era of illegal abortion had been a "sealed chapter" in U.S. women's history. The aura of shame surrounding...

This compelling documentary examines the erosion of abortion rights and access in the U.S. today. Medical and surgical abortions are still technically legal and available in most states. However, safe, legal procedures still remain out of reach for many women. Cost factors, travel distance, and strict legislation create barriers to access, particularly for low-income women. Intimate interviews with abortion providers, clinic workers, and the women who seek their services reveal the impact of...

From DANGER to DIGNITY: The Fight for Safe Abortion: Even though most abortions were illegal in the United States before 1973, they were still available. The outcome, however, often depended on a woman's financial situation. Most women who sought abortions risked their lives by going to practitioners who had little or no medical training. Hospital wards were filled with victims of unsafe procedures. There were some skilled physicians who agreed to terminate pregnancies for their wealthy private...

Nearly 60% of HIV+ individuals in Ethiopia are women. UNAIDS has estimated that approximately three quarters of all women infected with HIV/AIDS live in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2009, there were approximately 12 million women living with HIV and AIDS, compared to about 8.2 million men. (source) Gender bias and the biology of transmission have led to women being more vulnerable than men to become infected. Poverty, lack of access to education, and violence against women increase the risk. This...

Mona's Candle Light was discovered among reels of film that Geoff Alexander, of the Bay Area-based Academic Film Archive of North America, bought at a flea market in an unmarked box. There are no credits, so it is impossible to determine who shot it and for what purpose. The film is 1950s footage, probably amateur, of a well know lesbian club (which had opened in the 1930s), Mona's Candle Light, and it is an invaluable document of that underground scene.
