The Cylinder Archive [ www.cylinder.de ] release for January 2015: The US Marine Band was highly active making recordings on the 1890's. This version of the French national anthem  La Marseillaise was recorded in 1897 for Columbia. This particular vintage appears to often suffer from low volume, possibly caused by a softer wax composition that was used for a short time. Nevertheless, the band comes still out at a very enjoyable level.

The story about White records starts with Mr. White who was a former Edison employee. He took all the secrets of cylinder manufacturing and founded his own label "White Record" under the name of the General Phonograph Company. This adventure did last only for a short time - until Edison shut him down by lawsuits. Infact it bears a definite resemblance to the Edison Gold Moulded cylinders... The Cylinder Archive [ www.cylinder.de ] release for November 2012: The Edison Quartette does a beautiful number of 'Sunshine will come again', with a very harmonic waltz-end. This particular cylinder is a re-recorded issue of the first take originally made in 1899, dating from approx. 1901 and pitched at 144rpm. These were the very last cylinder records to be sold by the Edison Phonograph Co. made from the softer brown wax. The sound quality of this record clearly indicates it as a...

The Cylinder Archive [ www.cylinder.de ] release for December 2012: Carl Nebe with his Nebe-Quartett recorded a great variety of Christmas selections on cylinder record. Two of the songs feature a rare recording of a children's choir. The recently instroduced 4-minute cylinders now easily allowed a medley that would include much more than just two songs. These songs are included in this medley: Es ist ein Ros entsprungen ( English translation 'Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming' ) Stille Nacht (...

The Cylinder Archive [ www.cylinder.de ] release for January 2014: This Edison Blue Amberol is one of the later German series and was recorded August of 1917. Given that, we can be sure this cylinder never reached the market in Germany at all as the United States had entered World War in April of that same year. The original recording was made on an Edison Diamond Disc and acoustically dubbed to a cylinder master, which was done surprisingly well. At the very beginning one can hear a soft thunk...

An early Edison cylinder (#535) from approx. 1897-98. 'The Forge in the Forest' was composed by Theodor Michaelis under the German name 'Die Schmiede im Walde'. The recording set up for this one was definitely not the best as the triangle drowns out a lot of the other instruments.

The Cylinder Archive [ www.cylinder.de ] release for August 2010: This lively played number by the Edison Concert Band predates the famous version by Bessie Smith by more than a quarter century. It features very distinctive ragtime influence. This Edison brown wax cylinder dates from approx. 1900/01 and was pitched to a playback speed of 140rpm. Cylinders of this era would be still copies made by a pantograph. However, an increased playback pressure applied to the source cylinder did allow a...

The Cylinder Archive [ www.cylinder.de ] release for June 2010: Bicycle-Couplet, a German comic song by Hugo Gottschall, recorded in February 1902. This particular recording does not only represent the earlier German series of the Edison 2-minute cylinders, it was also recorded in the New York City studios. An additional proof beside the references are the lyrics of this song. The distinctive use of English terms along with an all-German song is anything but common. One can clearly hear that...
