Polio outbreaks in the United States in the summer of 1946 were at an all-time high. In Minneapolis, Minnesota there was a voluntary quarantine - and with no newspaper delivery boys there was no Sunday Funnies. Mayor (and future Vice President) Hubert H. Humphrey came to the rescue and read the Sunday comics over WCCO (and did a pretty good job). There is more about the Stay At Home Campaign and this broadcast at the Minneapolis Star Tribune: http://www.startribune.com/local/blogs/116452338.html

CASE DISMISSED Thus with the pounding of the gavel, the fate of men and women have been decided by the judge. This is the story of our legal rights, the battle to preserve and protect them, and how easily they can be lost. The program shows us just how fragile liberty and justice can be. These stories of everyday events are still interesting, even after 50 years. Stories of criminal liability, legal wills, buying on installment, and leasing an apartment. Each story is well written, and the...

America Looks Abroad was a 15-minute news and commentary show produced by the nonpartisan American Foreign Policy Association (FPA.org) and broadcast on NBC. ...sounds boring but this show aired 1939 through May of 1941 (according to Otrpedia), which was when the USA was grappling with neutrality, lend lease etc. so.... THE SIX SHOOTER The Six Shooter brought James Stewart to the NBC microphone on September 20, 1953, in a fine series of folksy Western adventures. Stewart was never better on the air than in this drama of Britt Ponset, frontier drifter created by Frank Burt. The epigraph set it up nicely: "The man in the saddle is angular and long-legged: his skin is sun dyed brown. The gun in his holster is gray steel and rainbow mother-of-pearl. People call them both The Six Shooter." Ponset was a...

MR. KEEN, TRACER OF LOST PERSONS When Mr. Keen, Tracer of Lost Persons first debuted over the Blue Network on October 12, 1937, the show’s title accurately described Keen’s stock-in-trade; the “kindly old investigator” tracked down individuals who had mysteriously vanished, leaving behind their families, homes, jobs and other day-to-day activities. Keen (he never had a first name, unless it was “Peachy”) was assisted in these duties by an Irishman named Mike Clancy. Mike...

21st PRECINCT Broadcast from July 7th 1953 through November 1st 1956 on the CBS network. 21st Precinct was a very dramatic police drama. CBS decided to use New York City as the backdrop for this series and to focus on the happenings in an actual police precinct. The premise was to put the listener into the drama from the opening phone call until the final report was written. The 21st was described as "just lines on a map of the city of New York. Proudly We Hail was a syndicated Cold War / JET AGE! / Korean War-era radio program that was produced by the US government to promote Army, WAC, and Air Force recruitment. It featured radio dramas in a variety of genres - SciFi, patriotic, true stories, biographical, etc. It was also broadcast on AFRS. Some of these files suffered from that curious practice (that some companies that sell OTR have undertaken) of slightly slowing down the speed of the broadcast. It lengthens the episode length...

Biography in Sound was an hour-long documentary radio program that was produced and broadcast in the 1950s. It's one of the best examples of radio excellence - the production is exemplary and I find every episode to be compelling. It's one of my favorites; I don't understand why it isn't more well known! Each episode featured multiple guests, who often were peers or friends of the person who was the featured subject. For example, the show on Hemingway features Mickey Spillane, Gary Cooper, Al...
