Mattia Pascal endures a life of drudgery in a provincial town. Then, providentially, he discovers that he has been declared dead. Realizing he has a chance to start over, to do it right this time, he moves to a new city, adopts a new name, and a new course of life--only to find that this new existence is as insufferable as the old one. But when he returns to the world he left behind, it's too late: his job is gone, his wife has remarried. Mattia Pascal's fate is to live on as the ghost of the...

Biography in Sound was an hour-long documentary radio program that was produced and broadcast in the 1950s. It's one of the best examples of radio excellence - the production is exemplary and I find every episode to be compelling. It's one of my favorites; I don't understand why it isn't more well known! Each episode featured multiple guests, who often were peers or friends of the person who was the featured subject. For example, the show on Hemingway features Mickey Spillane, Gary Cooper, Al...

Martha Wilkerson (AKA G.I. Jill) hosted a couple shows on the United States government-produced Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). One program she hosted was G.I. Jive ( http://archive.org/details/AfrsG.i.Jive ) and another was Jill's All-Time Jukebox, which ran concurrent to the other show during part of its run (she mentions it during G.I. Jive). Also see The Army-Navy Screen Magazine 55 (1945) here on Archive.org. I only have 5 Jill's All-Time Jukebox shows :( but there are some real gems....

Proudly We Hail was a syndicated Cold War / JET AGE! / Korean War-era radio program that was produced by the US government to promote Army, WAC, and Air Force recruitment. It featured radio dramas in a variety of genres - SciFi, patriotic, true stories, biographical, etc. It was also broadcast on AFRS. Some of these files suffered from that curious practice (that some companies that sell OTR have undertaken) of slightly slowing down the speed of the broadcast. It lengthens the episode length...

NPR has said that Vox Pop was the first "Quiz Show" but that was sort of peripheral to the show, which was produced in a different location each week. Polio outbreaks in the United States in the summer of 1946 were at an all-time high. In Minneapolis, Minnesota there was a voluntary quarantine - and with no newspaper delivery boys there was no Sunday Funnies. Mayor (and future Vice President) Hubert H. Humphrey came to the rescue and read the Sunday comics over WCCO (and did a pretty good job). The Jubilee! radio show was broadcast on the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS) and featured "Negro" performers. The dates on these files, show numbers, as well as some performer's names, came from the Jubilee! transcription pages by Carl Hallstrom & Bo Scherman: http://home.swipnet.se/dooji/jubilee.htm The Radio Gold Index http://www.radiogoldindex.com DB was helpful too. Any typo or error is mine. :D

"This sound recording is of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's 'Quarantine' speech at Chicago, Illinois. During the speech, Roosevelt said '... the will for peace on the part of peace-loving nations must express itself to the end that nations that may be tempted to violate their agreements and the rights of others will desist from such a course.'" This highly entertaining animated film begins as a young girl settles down into bed to sleep after coming home from a party. One of her feet protrudes from under the bed cover and the toes come alive and discuss how painful they are after being cramped into ill-fitting shoes all day. The toes show in a series of flash-backs how they have been maltreated, and a dream shows how they would like to be treated - feet measured, shoes fitted and lots of time spent out of shoes and stockings. 2...

Interview with Jam Handy (1886-1983), pioneer producer of sponsored and industrial films. The program, hosted by WWJ-TV host Bob Leslie, has low sound level throughout, but is included here because of its historical importance.
