This is the original story that the later series of much-loved Boxcar Children books was based on. Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny Alden are brothers and sisters who become orphans. Rather than be sent to their grandfather, whom they were raised to believe is an awful man, they decide to run away. One night, during a storm, the children take refuge in an old abandoned boxcar, and decide to make it their home. Meanwhile, their grandfather tries to track them down.

LibriVox recording of Mansfield Park by Jane Austen. Read by Karen Savage. Miss Frances, the youngest Ward sister, "married, in the common phrase, to disoblige her family, and by fixing on a lieutenant of marines, without education, fortune, or connexions, did it very thoroughly. She could hardly have made a more untoward choice." Some years later, pregnant with her ninth child, Mrs. Price appeals to her family, namely to her eldest sister and her husband, Sir Thomas Bertram, for help...

To see the transcribed text with images (if available) use the FB2 version. This is one of the most famous of Ballantyne's more than eighty books, which is strange, because it was one of the first. Furthermore it owes a great deal to James Bowman's "Our Island Home", which was published just before Ballantyne started to write "The Coral Island". That said, it is a fine early effort at writing a book intended for the interest of teenagers. It is an enjoyable read, and there...
