This book examines the theology of icons in the eighth century, the most critical period in the evolution of the Eastern Church's teaching on images. The principal source is provided by the acta of the Seventh Ecumenical Council of 787. The political circumstances which led to the outbreak of the controversy over icons are discussed in detail but the main emphasis is on the theological arguments and presuppositions of the participants in the council. Major themes include the nature of...

Bishop K.C. Pillai, D.D., (c.1900-1970) As a convert to Christianity from Hinduism, Bishop K.C. Pillai came to the Western world on a singular mission: to teach the Eastern culture of the Bible. The Bible is filled with passages that perplex the Western mind, and yet they were readily understood by the Easterner....

This is the entry from J.S. Assemani's Catalog of the Syriac Manuscripts in the Vatican Library, which first made known to the wider world the important Christian Palestinian Aramaic Lectionary in Vatican Syr 19. The colophon, reproduced by Assemani on pp. 101-103, contains important information about the history of CPA-speaking communities of Palestine and gives evidence that CPA was being used in what is today the West Bank in Palestine up until the eleventh century.

More than a source of mere linguistic curiosities, the Syriac churches have also preserved a...

LibriVox recording of Our Journey to Sinai, by Agnes von Blomberg Bensly. Read by Sue Anderson. Fortress-walled Saint Catherine's monastery on the Sinai peninsula has been a pilgrimage site since its founding by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian in the 6th century. Despite Muhammad's exalted place in Islam, even today there is still surprisingly little actually known about this shadowy figure and the origins of the Qur'an because of an astounding lack of verifiable biographical material. Furthermore, most of the existing biographical traditions that can be used to substantiate the life of Muhammad date to nearly two centuries after his death, a time when a powerful, expansive, and idealized empire had become synonymous with his name and vision - thus...

Western Tradition teaches that New Testament is written in Greek while many of Eastern Traditions (For example, Church of the East) teaches that New Testament is written in Aramaic. Aramaic NT in Eastern Tradition is called Aramaic Peshitta. According to First century Hebrew Priest & Historian  Josephus , Greek wasn't spoken in first century Israel. Josephus also points out the extreme rarity in terms of a Hebrew (a.k.a Judean) knowing Greek in first century AD. Josephus wrote: "I...
