I ask only once a year: please help the Internet Archive today. Right now, we have a 2-to-1 Matching Gift Campaign, so you can triple your impact! Most can’t afford to give, but we hope you can. The average donation is $45. If everyone reading this chips in just $5, we can end this fundraiser today. All we need is the price of a paperback book to sustain a non-profit website the whole world depends on. We have only 150 staff but run one of the world’s top websites. We’re dedicated to reader privacy so we never track you. We never accept ads. But we still need to pay for servers and staff. I know we could charge money, but then we couldn’t achieve our mission: a free online library for everyone. This is our day. Today. To bring the best, most trustworthy information to every internet reader. I believe all of this is doable, if we pull together to create the internet as it was meant to be. The Great Library for all. The Internet Archive is a bargain, but we need your help. If you find our site useful, please chip in. Thank you.

The Head-Up Display (HUD) has been developed from the well-known reflecting gunsight by applying electronic methods to the representation of flight path information, which is optically superimposed on the forward visual field. Previous investigations of the combination of information in superimposed fields are reviewed to show the relationship between properties and design of the HUD. An acceptable standard of safe usage is sought in the evidence of ability to perform concurrent tasks based on... Topics: DTIC Archive, Naish, J. An experimental study was conducted to determine critical values of the essential optical and electronic design parameters for head-up displays based on the visual requirements of the pilots who will use these displays. This information will provide a basis for future specifications covering this type of display. The investigation covered two areas, size of exit pupil and binocular disparities due to optical distortions. The exit pupil study was conducted in a flight simulator in which a wide... This paper focuses on the correlation of two successive scalar images for the purpose of measuring imaged fluid motions. A method is presented for deforming, or transforming, one image to another. Taylor series expansions of the Lagrangian displacement field are used, in conjunction with an integral form of the equations of motion, to approximate this transformation. The proposed method locally correlates images for displacements, rotations, deformations, and higher order displacement gradient... The purpose of the Integrated Head-Up Display (I-HUD) program was to demonstrate the advantages associated with using a Liquid Crystal Matrix Display and Diffraction Optics combiner in the design and construction of a high brightness head-up display system. The program resulted in the design and fabrication of the I-HUD brassboard consisting of a pilot's display unit, built in a form factor similar to that of the production F16 HUD, and test support equipment. The following devices and modules... Topics: DTIC Archive, Ernstoff,Michael N, HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO EL SEGUNDO CA DISPLAY SYSTEMS LAB, *HEAD UP...
This study investigated an analytical means of selecting the quickening time constant for the standardized Heads-Up Display flight path marker. The theoretically determined time constant allowed a faster, less resource intensive means of selecting the quickening time constant. The theoretically best time constant for pilot-aircraft handling qualities was equal to the airframe pitch attitude high frequency zero time constant, T-theta-2. Flight test indicated an empirical, more labor intensive... Topics: DTIC Archive, Konnert, Gary M., AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF...
An in-flight investigation of the effect of head up display (HUD) symbol control laws has been conducted using a variable stability T-33 aircraft. The results indicate that HUD delays (pure time delays) of the order to of 140 msec in up-and-away flight have little effect on flying qualities. Sampling at intervals of 100 msec (10 hz) has a marked effect and degrades Cooper-Harper pilot ratings from a rating of 2 (good with negligible deficiencies) to a rating of 6 (very objectionable but with... A design guide for Head-Up Displays (HUDs) has been prepared to assist the HUD engineer by providing in one source a list of design criteria for HUDs. The criteria are based on a review of existing HUD specifications and HUD research. This Final Phase A report covers two major task areas of this contract. One is the establishment and support of the Air Force-ASD/ENA Seafac Facilities in Building 485 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The second task is the establishment and support of an F4E (aircraft 304) flight test program at the Air Force Flight Test Center for evaluating an Austere HUD in mission modes off air-to-air missile, air-to-ground weapons, and and air-to-air gunnery mechanizations. The flight software executes in the Helmet-Mounted-Display Processor (HMDP) to provide vector-graphic displays that may be viewed on a helmet-mounted display (HMD), or a heads-up display (HUD). There are several different display formats, each of which is selectable via pushbutton switches mounted in a cockpit mockup. In addition, to these display selection inputs, the program is responsive to data value inputs which can be expressed using these same pushbuttons under various modes. Dynamic... The 'Programmable Cockpit' is a low-cost facility utilising personal computers linked together to represent the fundamental displays of a fixed-wing aircraft. The cockpit instruments can be displayed either in the conventional manner or in a 'glass-cockpit' type format. Aircraft controls include a sidestick and throttle. It was designed so that the instrument layouts and display formats could be reconfigured rapidly and tested in a reasonable aircraft representation, with the pilot under...
