In 1928, he was probably the first hillbilly artist to appear on radio in the Baltimore area. Between 1930 and 1960, he continually moved around, not only playing venues in his home state, Virginia and Kentucky (especially Charleston and Fairmont), but further afield to Miami, Iowa and Philadelphia. In 1946, he...

This is a contemporary amateur home recording of a live WWII-era radio news broadcast (see note below), originally aired on August 16th, 1945. Commentator Richard Harkness voices his suspicions of the motivation behind Japan's surrender. The original recording is overmodulated, and there is some fading towards the end of the program. The disk label reads "News Richard Harkness Aug. 16, 1945 11:15 PM".

(09 Episodes) "Front Page Farrell" was a 15 minute daily, "Husband & Wife Detective Team" Soap Opera/Crime Serial, broadcast by Mutual/NBC from June 23, 1941 thru March 26, 1954. This serial was a Soap Opera disguised as a Crime Serial, to coax the working-class man to sit by the radio, after his long hard day at work. Judging by the length of the run, the idea worked! Because this detective soap opera took place during WWII, many of the episodes were taken directly from...

Radio drama left the air on September 30, 1962, when CBS ran the last episodes of Suspense and Johnny Dollar. There were radio executives, production staff, writers, and actors, who thought that radio drama still had a place in network programming, and ABC Radio thought it was worth a try. In August 1964 the anthology series started with its 20-minute episodes, five days per week, with adventure, drama, science fiction, comedies, and other formats. SMITH BALLEW Don't know much about the particulars of the interviews. Took place in Texas, perhaps in the mid to late 1960s and on at least two separate dates and locations (Temple U. being one). Smith reminisces with a couple of fellows. They chat a bit about specifics and then spin a few 78s they've just been talking about. This is paired down from the original tape, with just one song between each bit of talking. The interview is broken into five parts of roughly 30 minutes each. Not even...
