Nightfall only ran for a couple years over the CBC in the early 1980s, but thanks to its mix of sharp storytelling, strong acting and disturbing sound effects, this horror anthology continues to be a favorite among fans of the medium. Only problem? Most of the available shows have pretty poor sound quality, and thanks to legal issues with the CBC, it's unlikely we'll be getting an official release anytime soon. But in the mid-1990s, Durkin-Hayes released a handful of Nightfall cassettes. I've...

5 x 15 Mins Written and performed by a brother and sister team, these 5 series see the hapless reporter Jeremy spend 24 hours with a series of "incredible women". To add to the verisimilitude, real well known people speak to Jeremy about the person he spends time with - usually being somewhat disparaging about his subject.   For me, the joke (and the ideas) started wearing thin after Series 4......... 1) Eleanor Fane-Gore: Children's writer, closet Facist and wolf enthusiast Eleanor...

LUX RADIO THEATRE Lux Radio Theatre was indisputably the biggest, most important, most expensive drama anthology program on radio. It ran from October 14, 1934 until June 7, 1955, then continued on television as Lux Video Theatre until 1957. In all, some 926 episodes were broadcast, providing a record of the most important entertainment events in American theatre and, later, film. DOWN OUR WAY Not much is known about this series. A search on the internet turned up virtually nothing, and it is not mentioned in any of the reference books, except for a short blurb in Jay Hickerson’s Ultimate Guide. However, it is a very entertaining show. The storyline revolves around neighbors helping neighbors, and using their faith in their daily lives. Believed to have been made in the early 1930s, the series is accented with the main characters practicing their choir hymnals. It was...

The Strange Dr. Weird  is a radio program broadcast on  Mutual  from 1944 to 1945. Sponsored by Adam Hats, the drama is notable in part because it was a sister series to  The Mysterious Traveler , both in theme and its narrator.  Maurice Tarplin , who was also the creepy voice of  The Mysterious Traveler . Many of the scripts were condensed 15-minute versions of scripts originally broadcast on  The Mysterious Traveler . To the accompaniment of an  organ 's spooky strains, Tarplin...

3 Series of different numbers of episodes Even by the standard of the early 1980s, this series is more "Dixon of Dock Green" than "The Sweeney", albeit that the writer attempts to make his central character sound hard edged and tough. View it as more an entertaining period piece and you will not feel let down.
