Mae West was a guest on the December 12, 1937 episode of and played an unrepentant Eve in an "Adam and Eve" skit by Arch Oboler. It caused an uproar and the FCC found that it "violated the ethics of decency." NBC issued an apology during the next show (but I don't have that episode. Mae West didn't appear on the radio again until 1950. More in the google news archives: http://tinyurl.com/9tkqyyf

(63 Episodes) "The Fibber McGee & Molly Show," one of the longest-running radio sitcoms, premiered on NBC Radio Network in 1935, remaining popular until its demise in 1959, long after radio had ceased to be the dominant form of American household entertainment. * SYNOPSIS: Much of the show's humor relied on recurring gags, unseen regulars & punchlines that popped up here & there for its many broadcast years. ** THE McGEE'S HALL CLOSET **: One of the running FM&M jokes...

(143 Episodes) Update: ** Episode information added to all uploads prior to Jan 05, 2011 JACK BENNY (Feb 14, 1894 – Dec 26, 1974): Jack Benny, born Benjamin Kubelsky, was an American comedian, vaudevillian, radio, television, and film actor. Widely recognized as one of the leading American entertainers of the 20th century, Benny played the role of the comic penny-pinching miser, insisting on remaining 39 years old on stage despite his actual age, and often (although an accomplished violinist)...

The complete surviving 1939 broadcasts, from original recordings of the program as it went on the air live, without modern remastering or reconditioning. There will be occasional flaws in the recordings but there are few flaws in the performances of Jack Benny and company, who were, by now, long enough established as masters of comic timing. Cast: Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone, Phil Harris, Eddie Anderson (Rochester), Kenny Baker through 18 June, Dennis Day as of 8 October, Don Wilson...

LUX RADIO THEATRE Lux Radio Theatre was indisputably the biggest, most important, most expensive drama anthology program on radio. It ran from October 14, 1934 until June 7, 1955, then continued on television as Lux Video Theatre until 1957. In all, some 926 episodes were broadcast, providing a record of the most important entertainment events in American theatre and, later, film. The show was first broadcast on the NBC Blue Network on Sundays at 2:30 PM. The show featured adaptations of...

(175 Episodes) AWESOME! FAMILY PROGRAMING! "Dr. Christian" was broadcast by CBS every Sunday from Nov 07, 1938 thru January 06,1950. It was a soap opera, but not your every day soap opera. This soap opera played like a serial drama (as each episode was complete), but to keep listeners abreast of the 'goings-on', past activity was referred to within other episodes, as was/is done with all other soap operas. Dr. Christian was portrayed by Jean Hersholt; you may recall that Jean also...

CHALLENGE OF THE YUKON Challenge of the Yukon was a long-running radio series that began on Detroit's station WXYZ (as had The Lone Ranger and The Green Hornet ), and an example of a Northern genre story. The series was first heard on February 3, 1938. The program was an adventure series about Sergeant William Preston of the Northwest Mounted Police and his lead sled dog, Yukon King, as they fought evildoers in the Northern wilderness during the Gold Rush of the 1890s. Preston, according to...

(97 Episodes) THE BEST sitcom BY FAR!! "The Aldrich Family" is one of those really GREAT and TIMELESS Old Time Radio sitcoms that make you laugh every time you listen to it. The main characters (created by Clifford Goldsmith) never age. Henry Aldrich (portrayed by Ezra Stone, Vic Jones and Bobby Ellis) is one of those types of teenagers everyone has met at sometime during life, as is his best buddy, Homer Brown (Jackie Kelk, Jack Grimes, Johnny Fieldler). More characters: Mary...

Classified as a juvenile crime drama but written and acted with more adult style than most of the breed, "The Green Hornet"---whose protagonist fought crime by infiltrating or even partnering (initially) with known criminal operations, which deceive police into believing him a wanted criminal himself---was the creation of George W. Trendle and Fran Striker, the brains and head writer behind "The Lone Ranger" (whose protagonist, according to storyline, was the great-uncle of...

33 radio recordings of RKO's The Shadow, recorded as main character by Orson Welles between 1937 and 1938 It doesn't happen that often that a cultural icon plays a \"genre\" role, and in the 1930's it probably happened even less. But before a certain well-documented Martian Invasion rocketed him to fame and a contract with RKO, a 22 year-old Orson Welles funded his theatrical productions with radio work, including a year on the Mutual Network's now-legendary \"superhero\"...
