12 Moons Solo Saxophone Project Day 147 Date: 05/27/2013 Instrument: Tenor saxophone Location: Home studio in Clinton, WA (Whidbey Island) Notes: In my improvisation today I worked with the theme of tone color exploration within a specific mutliphonic. I used a single fingering as the primary point of departure and focused on an increase in volume to allow internal pitch clusters to create their own sound universes. I approached this improvisation by focusing on the counterpoint created by...

12 Moons Solo Saxophone Project Day 302 Date: 10/29/2013 Instrument: Tenor saxophone Location: The performance hall at Chief Sealth High School. Seattle, WA Notes: In today's improvisation, I worked with tightly contained bright tones in the upper register of the horn. I wanted a thick, densely woven sound texture with an overall pitch distance of less than 3 half steps. I used some dynamic variation, but overall maintained a steady stream of medium-loud volume. I did occasional dip particular...

An iron meteorite is the latest quarry for NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity. The rover's cameras revealed the meteorite on its trek to its long-term destination, Endeavour crater, in images taken on Sol 2363 (Sept. 16, 2010), the 2,363rd Martian day of the rover's mission on Mars. This view was taken with the navigation camera on Sol 2368 (Sept. 21, 2010), after a drive the preceding sol to get close to the rock. The meteorite is about half a meter (20 inches) long. The scene appears...

Neil Welch, Continuous Resonance Project Date: 02/03/2015 Location: Performance Hall at Chief Sealth High School. Seattle, WA Instrument: Tenor saxophone Notes: This morning I searched for an approach to the instrument I have not yet taken. I worked in vain for some time, reflecting on my current improvisatory interests and thinking about the directions I would like to explore further. I decided to enter into this goal through the modus of singing into the horn, a technique that seems to occupy...

12 Moons Solo Saxophone Project Day 346 Date: 12/12/2013 Instrument: Tenor saxophone Location: Home studio in Clinton, WA (Whidbey Island) Notes: My improvisation today is inspired by the solo techniques of drummer Chris Icasiano. This image shows an area of crustal separation on Jupiter's moon, Europa. Lower resolution pictures taken earlier in the tour of NASA's Galileo spacecraft revealed that dark wedge-shaped bands in this region are areas where the icy crust has completely pulled apart. Dark material has filled up from below and filled the void created by this separation. In the lower left corner of this image, taken by Galileo's onboard camera on December 16, 1997, a portion of one dark wedge area is visible,...

As NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit began collecting images for a 360-degree panorama of new terrain, the rover captured this view of a dark boulder with an interesting surface texture. The boulder sits about 40 centimeters (16 inches) tall on Martian sand about 5 meters (16 feet) away from Spirit. It is one of many dark, volcanic rock fragments -- many pocked with rounded holes called vesicles -- littering the slope of "Low Ridge." The rock surface facing the rover is similar in...

This richly textured look at Saturn's moon Tethys shows the huge crater Odysseus and its central mountain in relief, as well as many smaller impact sites. Vertical relief on solid solar system bodies is often most easily visible near the terminator (the line between day and night). Tethys is 1,071 kilometers (665 miles) across. North on Tethys is up in this view. The lit portion of Tethys seen here is on the moon's leading hemisphere as it orbits Saturn. The image was taken in visible light...

12 Moons Solo Saxophone Project Day 360 Date: 12/26/2013 Instrument: Tenor saxophone Location: Home studio in Clinton, WA (Whidbey Island) Notes: This improvisation makes use of de-tuned multiphoinc chords, played in dominant to tonic fashion as harmonic gestures. These multiphonics, written below as Chords 1-3, were very unstable and required a tight embouchure with very focused control to maintain them. When I would pull the air flow away to dip down the volume, Chord 2 had a tendency to...

This fingering, notated below, allows for only a brief spark of energy before the sound dies. To create it, a great deal of lip pressure was required against the reed.
