The Cylinder Archive [ www.cylinder.de ] release for September 2009: Through the few recordings that Thomas Alva Edison had made in his lifetime, only one recording made it into the record catalog. This recording, a speech given to the American people after World War 1 had just ended, is today the most well-known recording of Mr. Edison's voice among collectors. Although issued on a 4-minute Blue Amberol cylinder, the speech does only last for 1:47 Minutes. A different take of his speech was...

Clara Smith was a part of the great migration from the south, moving from her home in South Carolina to Harlem in the early 1920s, where she became a popular blues singer. She actively recorded throughout the 1920s, including this performance of "Don't Advertise Your Man" on April 23, 1924. There is an uncredited (and very minimal) piano and ukelele accompaniment. From the original 78 rpm disk.

This is a contemporary amateur home recording of a live WWII-era radio news broadcast (see note below). This is the May 18th, 1941 installment of Walter Winchell's program of news and commentary, presented in Winchell's characteristically sensationalist style. The program is broken up between three sides on two 10" 78rpm disks; I have joined these together, but there are gaps between the sides. There is also some noise and a few choppy spots near the beginning, and some speed variation....

Document number CIA-RDP79-00891A001100050001-6 declassified and released through the CIA's CREST database. Previously available only on four computers located outside of Washington D.C., the Agency was successfully pressured into putting the files online as a result of a MuckRock lawsuit and the efforts of Emma Best. The metadata was collected by Data.World, and the files are now being archived and made text searchable by the Internet Archive.
