Computer animator Michael Boydstun (of the four MIND'S EYE movies) presents a mesmerizing, kaleidoscopic flight of fancy inside a television set that beams out hallucinatory visions. This surreal and witty science-fiction/fantasy film serves as a good-natured critique of television and its effect on the mind. The musical score by Paul Speer and Queensryche's Scott Rockenfield provides a wonderfully gothic background.

Anarchivism is an ad-hoc group of volunteer archivists who are primarily aimed at saving and preserving both digital and analog media when current methods of preservation seem lacking. Officially started in 2012 as a way to pool together projects by several individuals, the group has become a centralized haven for capturing and sharing little-known or forgotten media. This does not simply include copying files from a website, but hunting down missing entries and filling holes to create as...

The LaserDisc version of The Gate to the Mind's Eye, in 60 frames per second. A constant image height version is also available which is optomized for widescreen displays. This was done by removing the letterboxing on some parts of the footage so that it fills up the entire screen. The audio on the constant image height version is also from the DVD instead of the original.

Processed World magazine was founded in 1981 by a small group of dissidents, mostly in their twenties, who were then working in San Francisco's financial district. The magazine's creators found themselves using their only marketable skill after years of university education: “handling information.” In spite of being employed in offices as “temps,” few really thought of themselves as “office workers.” More common was the hopeful assertion that they were photographers, writers,...

Punk Planet was a 16,000 print run punk zine, based in Chicago, Illinois, that focused most of its energy on looking at punk subculture rather than punk as simply another genre of music to which teenagers listen. In addition to covering music, Punk Planet also covered visual arts and a wide variety of progressive issues — including media criticism, feminism, and labor issues. The most notable features in Punk Planet were the interviews and album reviews. The interviews generally ran two or...

In 1976, Jean Baudrillard sent this essay to the French magazine Critique, where Michel Foucault was an editor. Foucault was asked to reply, but remained silent. Forget Foucault (1977) made Baudrillard instantly infamous in France. It was a devastating revisitation of Foucault's recent History of Sexuality--and of his entire oeuvre--and also an attack on those philosophers, like Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, who believed that desire could be revolutionary. In Baudrillard's eyes, desire...

In 1992, almost a decade before   Nadia: the Secret of Blue Water  would  receive a proper release in the US through ADV Films, it was licensed by another company: Streamline Pictures. They produced an English dub, headed by Carl Macek and renamed simply Nadia , and released the first eight episodes before the dub was seemingly canceled. Here these episodes are, recorded from the VHS tapes. I was only able to record the audio of these episodes, not the video, and as such, I've left two sets...

"Over the Edge" becomes "The Haunted Edge" as Don speaks from beyond the grave, electrocuted by a toaster, and offers "five hours to kill together". This mid-July show moves into a world (and afterworld) of the macabre, creepy and just plain strange. Blended together are stories by Poe, Lovecraft, Dickens, and a remarkably obscure sci-fi-horror work ("Cancrogregina") from the 1950s by Italian writer Tommaso Landolfi. Orson Welles refuses to pick up a...

Ever since novelist William Gibson broke out with the iconic cyberpunk novel, Neuromancer, he's been sketching eerily prescient, near-future worlds that seem both uncanny and entirely believable. William Gibson appears on our October 17th and October 20th show and podcast, but the entire...
