With the re-branding of computing power and machines as something welcome in the home and not just the workshop, a number of factors moved forth to sell these machines and their software to a growing and large group of customers. Besides the introduction of more elegant cases and an increased presence by larger and larger firms, a strong argument can be made that one of the forces was the proliferation of computer-related magazines and newsletters that gave a central, printed home for writing...

As older software falls out of accessibility, various groups and individuals have created large compilations of wide ranges of titles and works, resulting in often-very-large compilations that are then accessible in bulk. Some are well-maintained catalogs while others are simply mega-size archive files. This collection compiles the compilations into one place.

Mystery House is an adventure game released in 1980 by Roberta and Ken Williams for the Apple II. The game is remembered as one of the first adventure games to feature computer graphics and the first game produced by On-Line Systems, the company which would evolve into Sierra On-Line. The game starts near an abandoned Victorian mansion. The player is soon locked inside the house with no other option than to explore. The mansion contains many interesting rooms and seven other people: Tom, a...

1. What is Tamagotchi?    Tamagotchi is a popular game which originated in Japan.  Tamagotchi (meaning "Love Egg") is a virtual pet.  The original Tamagotchi (©1996 by Bandai) was to be carried with the player (it was a key chain).  Your job was to care for the virtual pet, and in about 30 days it would grow up and fly away.    The following is an excerpt from Bandai's Original, Tamagotchi Info slip:     "Tamagotchi is a tiny pet from cyberspace who needs your love to...

I was looking at my Oregon Trail disc, wondering which version it is, and I found out that it is version 1.0! I thought it was version 3.1 or something, but no, the very first 1.0. This is the 1993 release of the game. This is the third version 1.0 disc I uploaded here. First it was Sammy's Science House, then Math Blaster Ages 9-12, and now it's The Oregon Trail.

This is a wide and variant collection of CD-ROM based software, that is, software that came on a CD-ROM for installation on computers, or played in consoles. Ranging from applications and games to gatherings of public-domain software or clip art, the heyday of the CD-ROM is roughly 1989 to 2001. In all cases, the capacity of the CD-ROM stayed steady at 640-700mb a side, although some used tricks to claim they had more (due to compression, or adding up both sides of two-sided CD-ROMs). Most are...
