German director Fritz Lang is best known for the highly influential films from relatively early in his career, especially Metropolis (1927) and M (1931). But he also had a brief Hollywood heyday during the mid 1940s, when he made some of his best films. Scarlet Street has been claimed by film noir. This attribution is understandable. The lighting is dark, with heavy use of shadows. The characters are all shady as well. Kitty is certainly a femme fatale, although hints are dropped that she is an...

One of the most unique and uniquely odd film I have seen. Considering when and where it was made, the production values are almost unbelievably high. It seems to have been made in occupied France, with the clear intent to blame the Freemasons as dupes and/or masterminds in engineering the outbreak of war. While proving the premise seems like it would be an uphill battle, the film demonstrates great care in citing historical events within France to back this up. Citing Freemason infiltration...

“Not recommended for ‘Hoppy’ fans” (IMDB review quote). Pre-Hopalong-Cassidy William Boyd stars in this primitive early talky that's cornier than an Iowa silo in September. Other than some spectacular stunt flying (see NOTE) all it has going for it is its curiosity value. IMDB rating 5.4. Directed by Tay Garnett. Released in 1929. Complete pint (minus a few missing frames). NOTE: The pilot of Boyd’s biplane was pioneer female aviator Pancho Barnes.

“Murder, music and malice in the old South” “’Gone with the Wind’ on speed” (IMDB reviews quotes). A hodgepodge of a movie that can’t decide if its a romantic comedy, a romantic drama or a musical. Joan Blondell and John Wayne costar, but Wayne really has a supporting role. Hattie Noel is particular fun as Blondell’s no-nonsense maid. The production values are good even though they unbelievably include French cancan dancers from the Folies Bergere. Well it is what it is, so just...

An outstanding figure in the story of modern America, and central to the struggle of American patriots to take the country back to her founding principles, was the great industrialist and humanitarian Henry Ford Sr. Ford was born on a farm in Wayne County, (near Dearborn) Michigan, on July 30, 1863, the son of Mary and William Ford, who had emigrated from Ireland in 1847. As a boy, Henry loved to do mechanical work with his hands. He attended rural schools only to the age of 15, when he found...
