Faust is the protagonist of a classic legend. He is a scholar who is highly successful yet dissatisfied with his life, so he makes a pact with the Devil, exchanging his soul for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures. Created in the early 1920s, Clarke's images reflect the influences of Art Nouveau and Art Deco, forming a powerful contribution to the supernatural air of Goethe's masterpiece.

The second canto of Dante's Inferno is in some ways a continuation of Canto 1 , where Dante encounters the poet Virgil while lost and impeded in the selva oscura , the dark forest of mid-life dissolution and oppression. Dante agrees to be be led by Virgil through the realms of hell and purgatory in order to reach the portals of paradise and thereby participate in the beatific vision. In Canto 2, Dante realises the depth of commitment required in such an undertaking and has second thoughts about...

Dante's Divine Comedy has exercised the imagination of poets, artists, historians, theologians, and lovers of literature and poetry for the past seven centuries. Numerous English translations have appeared since Henry Carey published the first widely circulated English translation in the early 1800s. William Blake was so moved by Carey's translation that he spent the last years of his life teaching himself Italian so as to work directly with Dante's text. During the final year of his life,...

LibriVox recording of The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde. Dorian Gray, a young man of wealth and stature in late 1800's London, meets Lord Henry Wotton while posing for a portrait by his friend Basil Hallward. Once the painting is complete, Dorian realizes that it will always be young and attractive, while he will be forced to age and wither with the years. Carelessly, he wishes the opposite were true. What happens is a treatise on morals, self-indulgence and how crucial personal...

Fangoria is an internationally distributed American horror film fan magazine, in publication since 1979. At the height of its popularity in the 1980s and early '90s it was the most prominent horror publication in the world. The magazine was released in an age when horror fandom was still a burgeoning subculture; in the late 1970s most horror publications were concerned with classic cinema, while those that focused on contemporary horror were largely fanzines. Fangoria rose to prominence by...

The Avenging Conscience was directed by D.W. Griffith in 1914. It is 50 minutes long, a step in Griffith's progressive move into feature films. His next film was to me his controversial masterpiece, Birth of a Nation. This film is based on writings of Edgar Allen Poe, it is Victorian and sentimental but it is also quite visual. Rather than be a spoiler I will let the story tell itself. I have added music and sound effects, and I may have gone a bit overboard myself as you will see if you watch...
