Alternate English title: "A Dream in Pink" A 1932 Shanghai femme fatale melodrama with comic touches, closer to the style of Hollywood than was typical of Shanghai films of that era (and including a direct reference to Ernst Lubitsch's 1929 "Love Parade") . A renowned but impoverished writer with a romantic character divorces his loyal hardworking wife that supports him, and marries a metropolitan society woman who intends to keep up her life in the dance halls - and expects...

“Would not be allowed today” “Not so romantic” “There’s no fool like an old fool” (IMDB reviews quotes). An English girls boarding school comedy where most of the “girls” appear to be beyond voting age. However the comedy soon morphs into drama when one of the students seduces a middle-age teacher. Good cast and adequate production values. Petula doesn’t sing but she dances (uh sort of). Recommended for when your skydiving jump has been rained out. IMDB rating 6.2. Directed...

“Surprise package” “Unsuccessful” “Amusing B-feature” “Interesting idea -- dull execution” (IMDB reviews quotes). An uneven British farce that has its moments, but the script often lets down the cast. Edward Rigby and Henry Mollison costar. Adequate production values. Watching it won’t kill you, but there are better ways to spend 60 minutes. IMDB rating 5.5. Directed by Godfrey Grayson. Released in 1950 (UK). Complete print. “Nicely done with flavorsome atmosphere” "Highly entertaining, well made mystery” “What a hoot!” (IMDB reviews quotes). This second of two Colombia Thatcher Colt mysteries comes with a hefty dose of ‘30s racism. There is big trouble in a circus that has as one of its main attractions a large group of black cannibals. Director John Huston, while a member of the U.S. Army Signal Corps in 1943, creates an Academy Award winning documentary, which he narrates with assistance from his actor father Walter, treating of the Armed Forces' successful effort to prevent the fall of the Aleutian Islands to advancing Japanese troops who had captured several islets. Although no claim can be reasonably made that this location was of major strategic importance during the War, it presented enormous tactical and logistic...

Georges Méliès was a French illusionist and filmmaker famous for leading many technical and narrative developments in the earliest days of cinema. (Wikipedia) A prolific innovator in the use of special effects, accidentally discovered the substitution stop trick, he was one of the first filmmakers to use multiple exposures, time-lapse photography, dissolves, and hand-painted color in his work. Because of his ability to seemingly manipulate and transform reality through cinematography,...

Life in and around a British bomber base from 1940 to early 1943. Excellent cast. Solid direction. Good production. This isn't a traditional war actioner. Rather it's a drama with romantic elements of how lives are impacted by war. Although highly regarded now, it flopped at its US opening, possibly because audiences were expecting a British actioner like "One of Our Aircraft is Missing" or "We Dive at Dawn." Directed by Anthony Asquith. Released in 1945. a.k.a. "Johnny...

Pulp magazines (often referred to as "the pulps"), also collectively known as pulp fiction, refers to inexpensive fiction magazines published from 1896 through the 1950s. The typical pulp magazine was seven inches wide by ten inches high, half an inch thick, and 128 pages long. Pulps were printed on cheap paper with ragged, untrimmed edges. The name pulp comes from the cheap wood pulp paper on which the magazines were printed. Magazines printed on better paper were called...

“Chesterfield strikes with a real winner” “What a cute little movie!” (IMDB reviews quotes). Hip dialog and a clever screenplay combine to make this a highly entertaining seriocomic little quickie.   “Screamingly funny!” “Don’t miss it” (IMDB reviews quotes). Tom Walls starrs in this risque comedy of British upper-middle-class morals. Yvonne Arnaud is a large part of the naughty fun. Based on an Aldwych Theater farce written and adapted for the screen by Ben Travers. This is another one that wouldn’t have gotten past the US censors.
