"Just Imagine," from 1930, used to make me drool as a kid seeing some of the fabulous stills in "Famous Monsters of Filmland." With its futuristic setting, "Metropolis"-style special effects, rocketship and Martians, I imagined I'd be in sci-fi paradise. But now I know that it might be better viewed as a pre-code, musical-comedy fantasy of Prohibition Era America. It was directed by David Butler, who was born in San Francisco, began directing in silents, and is...

Another simulated double feature program in a second-run movie house of the type which no longer exists: The lighthearted entertainment begins with coming attractions and a cartoon. Then in "Half a Sinner" a makeover and a naughty canary send a bored school marm (Heather Angel) and a handsome stranger (John King) off on a rolicking car chase with a corpse in the back seat. This leads to romance for her, him and the canary. The great Constance Collier is part of the fun. Next Diana...

In response to overwhelming public apathy the 2am Theater presents this special wildlife conservation double feature with lots of guys in gorilla suits: The simulated simian adventures begin with coming attractions followed by "The Gorilla" with the Ritz Brothers, Bela Lugosi and a guy in a gorilla suit. A Worthy wartime dramatic thriller of the underground resistance in German-occupied France. The 2am theater sneakly returns to inflict another insomniac double feature on unsuspecting Internet Archive users. This festival of bad acting in sound stage and stock footage jungles begins with the trailer for "Tarzan Escapes" (which doesn't belong here being a good movie and one of the best of MGM's Trazan series) followed by a newsreel. Then Wanda McKay tries to remember her lines in "Jungle Goddess." Unfortunately Amira Moustafa does remember her lines in "Queen...

"The Drums of Jeopardy" is a nifty little melodrama from 1931 starring Warner Oland of Charlie Chan fame. He plays "Dr. Boris Karlov" (no relation to the actor of similar name), a grieving father turned Bolshevik and gleeful sadist. Also featured is Clara Blandick, Auntie Em from 1939's "The Wizard of Oz;" comedy relief in what turns out to be a rather pivotal role. "Drums" was directed by the prolific George B. History esteems Danny Kaye as one of Hollywood's most popular and versatile stars of the World War II era. Kaye did it all -- he could sing, dance and chew scenery with reckless abandon. His face was a contortionist's trampoline and his voice was an instrument only one man knew how to play. Evidence of his theatrical skills is abundant, albeit sometimes difficult to find in the 21st Century. Time, however, has not been generous to Kaye's legacy. His comedy now seems so over the top that he ends...

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a 1966 farce musical comedy film, based on the stage musical of the same name. It was inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus (251-183 B.C.) – specifically Pseudolus, Miles Gloriosus and Mostellaria – and tells the bawdy story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. During a very prestigious 1920's writing contest, the cousins, Fred Dannay and Manfred B. Lee, created the character. The cousins were looking for a Sherlock Holmes and Watson all rolled into one character; Ellery Queen was their answer. Ellery Queen was an author who solved mysteries in his spare time and then wrote about his harrowing adventures; his sidekick was his own father, Richard Queen.  After the cousins won the contest, they proceeded to write novels about Ellery Queen. A fast-paced comic murder mystery with most of the action on a cross-county train. The mystery may not amount to much, but it leads to a spectacular eleven-minute thrill ride on a runaway railroad car that's not to be missed. Yes there's a guy in a gorilla suit (and a kangaroo in his own suit). Great fun, and it's recently been released on DVD. CAST NOTE: Walter Brennan, Sterling Holloway and Ray Corrigan appear uncredited. Ray, as usual, is in the gorilla suit.

Set in post-World War II New York City, the show closely followed the format of early Ellery Queen mystery novels where, before presenting the solution, a "Challenge To The Reader" was issued: the reader was challenged to guess the solution to the crime. In the series this tradition was followed by having Ellery Queen (Jim Hutton) "break the fourth wall," reviewing key clues and asking the audience if they knew the solution. The final act always used the time-honored...

The 2am Theater strikes again with another insomniac double feature. Our adventures in wacky science begin with coming attractions and a cartoon. Then spark generators drive Bela Lugosi batty in "The Devil Bat." The intermission featurette, "Science in Action," teaches us how to boil water and stuff. Then in "The Mad Monster" George Zucco's basement DIY project is a homemade werewolf because Ikea bookshelves had pushed him over the edge. (Feel free to try all of...

* Released: 1936-02-18 * Mystery/Suspense/Comedy (Eng USA) * Cert. #1899 * Chesterfield Motion Pictures Corp. * If you have read "The Last Trap" (by Sinclair Gluck), you will find the screenplay to be very different. You won't, however, be at all disappointed with the story, nor the outcome of the film. In this story, we discover there are many murder suspects available, when Elsa's Uncle Henry is found DEAD!. This romp, has many enjoyable twists and turns, and is, at times, quite...

The 2am Theater shamefully presents another insomniac double feature. This time it's all about the ladies (and some guys in gorilla suits). The sweaty safari begins with coming attractions and a cartoon, followed by the first feature, "Nabonga," with Julie London. The intermission featurette is chapter 2 of the serial "Perils of the Darkest Jungle" (a.k.a. "The Tiger Woman") with Linda Sterling. The second feature presentation is "Blonde Savage" with Gale...

Never could get an answer either way about this movie on reel to reel tape. I had this RKO classic converted to an AVI file by a friend of mine. I am hoping it is in public domain.

Some will say this is a murder mystery. Others will claim it's an adventure. Still others will insist it's a comedy. But no one can deny this is a wacky movie. So bad it's good? Yup. Directed by Albert Ray. Released in 1933. 2nd release edit?
