Who are the biggest super stars in the universe? For Adam Burrows, an astrophysics professor at Princeton University, it's not who, but "what," and they are far from Hollywood, or even earth, for that matter. Burrows would tell you biggest super stars are the stars that die in a massive explosion called a "supernova." With support from the National Science Foundation, Burrows investigates supernovae and he has recently created 3D computer simulations showing the actual...

This artist's animation shows the explosion of a massive star, the remains of which are named Cassiopeia A. NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope found evidence that the star exploded with some degree of order, preserving chunks of its onion-like layers as it blasted apart. Cassiopeia A is what is known as a supernova remnant. The original star, about 15 to 20 times more massive than our sun, died in a cataclysmic "supernova" explosion viewable from Earth about 340 years ago. The remnant is...

This animation shows how a black hole may have formed in SN 1979C. The collapse of a massive star is shown, after it has exhausted its fuel. A flash of light from a shock breaking through the surface of the star is then shown, followed by a powerful supernova explosion. The view then zooms into the center of the explosion. A pulsar is generally believed to be a rapidly rotating neutron star that emits pulses of radiation (such as x-rays and radio waves) at known regular intervals. A millisecond pulsar is one with a rotational period in the range of 1-10 milliseconds. When a pulsar is created in a supernova, is is born spinning, but slows down over millions of years. However, if the pulsar is in a binary system, the influx of material into its accretion disk may help the pulsar spin up to the millisecond range....

What would happen in 4 billion years when our sun begins heading toward supernova? Scientists theorize that our sun would grow in size and for a time become a red giant. These animations show the resulting effects on the planets of our solar system. Note: This animation shows the changing habitable zone as the sun expands to become a Red Giant. Animator: Chris Meaney (HTSI). Producer: Chris Meaney (HTSI).

Animation of a Supernova Explosion. MPEG When a massive star explodes, its outer layers are hurtled out into space at thousands of miles an hour, leaving a debris field of gas and dust. This creates a shell of hot gas that glows brightly in X-rays. This animation shows this process and depicts the stellar debris that Chandra is able to observe, revealing the dynamics of the explosion. [Runtime: 0:15]

MPEG When the core of a massive star collapses, a supernova explosion occurs and the collapsed core forms an extremely compact, rapidly spinning neutron star. Some theories propose that the neutrons could dissolve into free quarks, causing the neutron star to shrink further and become a strange quark star. NASA has announced the detection of a possible strange quark star. [Run time = 0:25 sec]

This animation transitions from a visible light image of the planetary nebula called NGC 246 to Spitzer's new infrared view. The movie highlights Spitzer's ability to see the invisible; as the movie dissolves to the Spitzer image, a giant ring (red) emerges. This clumpy ring consists of material that was expelled from the aging star at the center of the nebula. Planetary nebulas are clouds of gas and dust that surround dying stars. When a star like our own Sun begins to run out of fuel, its...

This is a segment from larger project. Erik Amlee recorded these tapes while he lived in Houston from 1988-91. He recorded lots of crazy television on about a dozen tapes. I took two tapes at a time and began combining them, mixing the audio independet of the video. This segment gets real metaphysical and it is juxtaposed with a subliminal self help infomercial. (the whole houston tapes are avilable on the internet archive)

The Defenestrascope throws the view through windows from monumental towers, in contemporary and medieval European city and town. This eccentric exploration of urbanised space revolves around a sample ensemble setting of the traditional 16th century Norfolk song ‘Go from the Window’, framed by a fragmented clapping rhyme. A neo-rococo vaudevillian romp dedicated to Alan Lomax and Gus Elen.

A collection of twisted short clips, taken exclusively from the freely downloadable movies at www.archive.org, set to an original, spleen-bursting score. This movie is available as a DVD-compliant MPEG2, a VCD-compliant MPEG1, and whatever other formats you see listed to your left.
