Another great program from waterways producer Erik Hutchins and his team. Southern Florida has both the gorgeous Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and the Everglades National Park, two incredible sites to visit. This is a great overview of the third largest living coral reef in this hemisphere. Truly remarkable footage and wonderful information to boot.

Made in the 1970s this film THE DEEP SCATTERING LAYER tells the story of the search for a mysterious "second floor" in the ocean, as recorded by sonar devices. This floor -- consisting of marine animals such as shrimp, whales and dolphins -- moves to different levels at different hours, different days, and different seasons. It is probed by U.S. Navy sonar, deep-trawled nets with hydrophones and instruments, and finally by by ocean going submersibles. While the film presents the...

This historic U.S. Navy film recounts the 1966 SeaLab II effort, involving ten aquanots who lived in a chamber beneath the sea, under seven atmospheres of pressure. Includes footage of diving bell, SeaLab I, SeaLab II, crew transfer vehicle, trained dolphins, and practice sessions to recover downed aircraft, sunken submarines and atomic bombs and other weapons. In Antarctica, relentless winds have created a unique type of snowdrift pattern known as megadunes. Formed by centuries of nearly continuous winds, megadunes are 1 to 8 meters high (1 meter is 3.3 feet), and 2 to 6 kilometers from crest to crest. They cover roughly 500,000 square kilometers--a California-sized area -- in the East Antarctic Plateau. People making ground traverses across the Antarctic Plateau in the 1950s and 1960s passed over several megadune areas, but because the dunes are so...

For several weeks in May and early June, rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/subsets/?Europe_2_01 daily satellite images of the North Atlantic Ocean west of Ireland have captured partial glimpses of luxuriant blooms of microscopic marine plants between patches of clouds. On June 4, 2007, the skies over the ocean cleared, displaying the sea's spring bloom in brilliant color. A bright blue bloom stretches north from the Mouth of the River Shannon and tapers off like a plume of blue smoke north of Clare...

This silent film shows U.S. Navy personnel as part of the Navy Marine Mammal Program working with a pilot whale to recover a practice torpedo. The origins of the NMMP program date back to 1960, when a Pacific White-sided Dolphin was acquired for hydrodynamic studies seeking to improve torpedo performance. The aim was to determine whether dolphins had a sophisticated drag-reduction system, but the technology of the day failed to demonstrate that dolphins have any unusual capabilities in this...

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- A dolphin silently glides through the water of the turn basin near the Vehicle Assembly Building of NASA's Kennedy Space Center. The turn basin was carved out of the Banana River when Kennedy Space Center was built. Dolphins frequent bays and coastlines, usually in depths under 20 meters. While some pods take up permanent residence and establish home waters, others are migratory and swim considerable distances from coast to coast. Dolphins are a frequent sight in...

This field guide is designed to permit observers to identify the cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) they see in the western North Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and the coastal waters of the U.S. and Canada. The animals described are grouped not by scientific relationships but by similarities in appearance in the field. Photographs of the animals in their natural environment are the main aids too identification. (Author)

The Black Sea dolphin is considered an endangered species with only a few thousand still alive. Although it is illegal to hunt dolphins, over 300,000 are killed every year due to bi-catch, or accidentally being caught in commericial fishing nets. To help solve the problem, a Romanian NGO has come up with a creative and inspirational idea to deter dolphins from getting tangled in nets.
