The Appendix was founded in late 2012 as a quarterly journal of experimental and narrative history Off the Map—Volume 1, Number 4—October 2013 Initially, we meant this to be a ‘blank’ issue, one in which we didn’t tie the content together with a theme. But when the articles started coming in, a more natural theme developed: one concerned with a geography of absence and hidden traces. By going off existing maps, we create new ones.

Stanford University Press, United States, 2011. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 228 x 152 mm. Language: English Brand New Book. The most typical treatment of international relations is to conceive it as a battle between two antagonistic states volleying back and forth. In reality, interstate relations are often at least two-level games in which decision-makers operate not only in an international environment but also in a competitive domestic context. Given that interstate rivalries are...

The Great Wall of China, winding 1,500 miles over mountain and plain, and from 15 to 50 feet high and 15 to 25 feet wide, is a reminder of the country's long struggle to keep out invaders from the North. For centuries it served as a boundary line between China and Mongolia. To reach the Krimmer Mennonite Brethren mission field in Inner Mongolia, missionaries had to cross the Great Wall. On the other side, shadowed by this barrier, they began the task of "breaking down walls" to the...

LIVING AND DYING IN MODERN TIBET by Orgyan Nyima PREFACE I was born in Lungda Village located in a Kham1 area in the early 1970s, attended a local primary school in the early 1980s, and received an undergraduate education in a provincial level college. Memories of my early life in Lungda Village are my vivid companions. Let me give you some examples: Daily village life moved to a rhythm of herding, milking, fetching water, spreading fresh dung on the ground to dry, collecting dry dung, and...

History According to Cattle is an expanded account of the acclaimed art and research project History of Other’s first major installment, The Museum of the History of Cattle (2013). The exhibition presents a large-scale ethnographic museum of world history as seen from the perspective of cattle, one of the most important companion species of humans. Thus, The Museum of the History of Cattle is the first museum to exhibit the cultural history of a non-human species. In the exhibit, the...

During the Victorian era, new laws allowed more witnesses to testify in court cases. At the same time, an emerging cultural emphasis on truth-telling drove the development of new ways of inhibiting perjury. Strikingly original and drawing on a broad array of archival research, Wendie Schneider’s examination of the Victorian courtroom charts this period of experimentation and how its innovations shaped contemporary trial procedure. Blending legal, social, and colonial history, she shines new...
