We present a stochastic two-population model that describes the migration and growth of semi-sedentary foragers and sedentary farmers along a river valley during the Neolithic transition. The main idea of this paper is that random migration and transition from sedentary to foraging way of life and backward is strongly coupled with the local crop production and the associated degradation of land. We derive a non-linear integral equation for the population density coupled with the equations for...

Volume 1b in Brill's Josephus Project contains Book 2 of Josephus' Judean War (translation and commentary). This book deals with a period of enormous consequence: from King Herod's death (4 BCE) to the first phase of the war against Rome (66 CE). It covers: the succession struggle, the governments of Herod's sons, Judea's incorporation as a Roman province, some notable governors (including Pilate), Kings Agrippa I and II, the Judean philosophical schools (featuring the Essenes), various rebel...

When the economic history of our times is written, one man will emerge as the prophet of both the financial collapse and the disasters associated with government management: Ron Paul. He alone among the political class sounded the warnings and sees the way out. This economic manifesto collects his greatest speeches and debates over the last 30 years, and provides documentary evidence that he is not only a master of the topic; he has provided a coherent explanation of nearly everything the...

This thesis is born out of the belief that we, each and every one, have an innate ability to shed all that is earthly and “to be” in Sacred space i.e. to be one with the Divine. Whether this occurs ona mountaintop, a city street, a holy site, a church, a synagogue, mosque, or temple or at seminary; whether it involves rituals, sights and sounds belonging to a specific place; or whether it can be found in the absence of all of the above, are questions that I seek to answer through my...

This extraordinary book explains the engine that has catapulted the Internet from backwater to ubiquity—and reveals that it is sputtering precisely because of its runaway success. With the unwitting help of its users, the generative Internet is on a path to a lockdown, ending its cycle of innovation—and facilitating unsettling new kinds of control.  IPods, iPhones, Xboxes, and TiVos represent the first wave of Internet-centered products that can’t be easily modified by anyone except...

'Plantation Memories' explores everyday racism. It is a compilation of episodes approaching racism as a psychological reality. Everyday racism, argues Grada Kilomba, is experienced as a violent shock which suddenly places the Black subject in a colonial scene – depriving one’s link with society. Unexpectedly, the past comes to coincide with the present and the present is experienced as if one were in that agonizing past, as the title Plantation Memories announces. Linking postcolonial...

This pioneering work by Jörg Guido Hülsmann, professor of economics at the University of Angers in France and the author of  Mises: The Last Knight of Liberalism , is the first full study of a critically important issue today: the ethics of money production. There is a reason that this book has been translated to Chinese, German, Spanish, Czech, and there are many more on the way. This book hits the intellectual sweet spot, speaking to the issues that are driving economic events right now....

In early 1900, a young cowboy from Alberta's Chief Mountain country joins the Canadian Mounted Rifles and sets out to defend British Empire interests in South Africa. On the march into the rebel republics, Frank Adams crosses the Great Karoo Desert. As the Canadian horse soldiers are made to pay for their own ignorance and the callous indifference of those who have sent them, their ideas of bravery and loyalty are reduced to their most raw, honest, and dangerous forms. The war introduces them...
