Ace Comics was the banner under which pulp magazine publisher Aaron A. Wyn and his wife Rose Wyn produced comic books between 1940 and the end of 1956. The Wyns had been publishing pulp fiction under the Periodical House and Magazine Publishers names since 1928. Like many comic book publishers of the day, Ace Comics earlier series included costumed superheroes, although as trends in the comic book market changed by the 1950s the focus shifted more to other genres, such as crime, horror,...

Heroes was a short-lived magazine published by Avalon Hill beginning in 1984. At the time Avalon Hill was trying to expand into the role-playing industry through the publication of four games: James Bond 007, Lords of Creation, Powers & Perils, and RuneQuest. The original editor, William E. Peschel, produced a magazine that was occasionally useful. He left after the seventh issue, and was replaced by Richard Snider, the creator of Powers & Perils. Content and Layout both deteriorated at...

Pulp magazines (often referred to as "the pulps"), also collectively known as pulp fiction, refers to inexpensive fiction magazines published from 1896 through the 1950s. The typical pulp magazine was seven inches wide by ten inches high, half an inch thick, and 128 pages long. Pulps were printed on cheap paper with ragged, untrimmed edges. The name pulp comes from the cheap wood pulp paper on which the magazines were printed. Magazines printed on better paper were called...

Very early on, from 1978 onward, real-world space exploration related articles were included in Starlog as background articles for illustrative purposes. This gave O'Quinn and Jacobs the idea to launch a true and similar sister magazine Future Life that broached the subject from the opposite site of the spectrum; real world space exploration articles, lightened up with articles stemming from the realm of science fiction film, television and literature. The magazine, featuring interviews with...

This was a remarkable film made as part of one of the most inventive series of films made for young learners, the 20-part 'Inventive Child' series, distributed in North America by Encyclopaedia Britannica Films. The film is an animated, non-narrated story about an extremely inventive boy, who develops a phonograph from materials found around the farm, beginning with a platter made from a pottery wheel. When his home phono is completed, the dog barks on the platter scare away a fox that has been...

Covering nearly seventy different herbs, this book details each plant’s specific role in several aspects of medieval society including cooking, healing, and pest control. Illustrated with 16th century prints which highlight the practical applications and symbolic significance of botanicals in the household as well as prints of the featured plants from a 15th century manuscript, this book provides a clear but thorough introduction to herbs and their diverse uses in medieval Europe.
