Transcript: Prof. Oddfellow here.  It’s a crucial question: what makes a language "living”?  What makes the language of Magic a living one? Well, there are Magic-fluent enclaves (from the Old French for interlocking recesses or dovetails) in which Magic is the primary language.  Some speak Magic words for ideological reasons, some because it is the only shared language in which both members of a couple feel sufficiently articulate.  There are also native speakers, as I know from...

Made With Creative Commons started as a book about business models, but it ultimately became a book about sharing. Part analysis, part handbook, part collection of case studies, we see Made With Creative Commons  as a guide to sharing your knowledge and creativity with the world, and sustaining your operation while you do. It makes the case that sharing is good for business, especially for companies, organizations, and creators who care about more than just the bottom line. Full of practical...

Noting that children's play activities, particularly the development of dramatic scenarios, have been a central focus of developmental-interaction thinking over many decades, this paper explores the emphasis on play and the specific meanings accorded to it within this developmental-interaction tradition. The first part of the paper considers the views of play held by the tradition's founders--Harriet Johnson, Caroline Pratt, and Lucy Sprague Mitchell--and how this view was realized in practice....

The purpose of this book is to consider early literacy education and whole language from the perspective of constructivist theory (which states that human beings acquire knowledge by building it from the inside in interaction with the environment) and research. More specifically, the book intends to show that the whole language movement is part of a larger revolution in thinking about learning and teaching, and to enable whole language advocates to explain, evaluate, and improve upon their...

In this article, the author describes ten of his favorite tools and explains how they can be employed in various ways: (1) to manage the classroom better; (2) to jump into fun activities with little or no preparation; or (3) to promote student-created art and materials. All of these teaching tools are affordable--even cheap. In the event that some might not be available in one's region, the author has added a few do-it-yourself alternatives. (Contains 1 table.)

This paper presents results of a tri-level evaluation of an on-going elementary school second language Foreign Language Experience (FLEX) program and explores the potential efficacy of such a program as viewed by the learners, their parents, and the regular classroom teachers. The program was begun in Spring 1982 in kindergarten and first grade in Knox County, Tennessee; instructors were graduate foreign language education students trained in James Asher's (1977) the Total Physical Response...

In the confusing (and often contradictory) world of food safety, appliances, ingredients and recipes, we can rely upon science to guide us from market to table. Long-held assumptions about cooking often fall away when examined and held up to scientific tests, yet understanding this food science will lead directly to better, safer food. Why, for example, do we sear meat? Why do onions make you cry, milk sauces curdle and why should you not put an ice cube on a burn? ©2010 Microsoft Corporation....

Sometimes the first step towards making a new (mathematics) game is discovering an unexpected possibility in some hitherto unplayed-with piece of equipment. At other times the first step is inventing new equipment. But rarely is any "new" idea for a game wholly original, either as a way of playing a game, or in its equipment. As letter-based word games, "Cross Words", "Hang the Butcher" and the great classic word-spelling game "Scrabble are familiar"; but...

The booklet is a self contained unit consisting of four elements--a mathematical puzzle, a set of instructions, response sheets, and a suitable container for keeping the unit together. This paper discusses total physical response storytelling (TPR-S) as a promising approach to teaching a Native American language to Native students who have not learned it at home. TPR-S is an extension of James Asher's TPR immersion approach to teaching second languages. It has become very popular with indigenous teachers because it allows students to be active learners, produces quick results, and does not involve the use of textbooks. After vocabulary has been learned using TPR, TPR-S...

Math games bring out kids' natural love of numbers. Yet in the waning days of school, students can't wait for that final bell to ring. Each summer, most students lose about two months of mathematical computation skills. So how do teachers keep their students focused on math up till the end? Before sending them off for the summer, get them hooked on math with fun, bite-size activities! This article presents 15 ideas, in 15 minutes or less.

In this article, the author discusses the game of Hex, including its history, strategies and problems. Like all good games, the rules are very simple. Hex is played on a diamond shaped board made up of hexagons. It can be of any size, but an 11x11 board makes for a good game. Two opposite sides of the diamond are labelled "red," the other two sides "blue" (or, often, "black" and "white"). The hexagons at the vertices of the diamond belong to either side....

100 Wonderful and Simple Science Activities for Children

Several teaching methods aid young children in learning foreign languages, all of which include continuous repetition and review of learned information. The two methods used in this study were Total Physical Response (TPR) and songs/chants. The TPR method used a gesture for each vocabulary card, and the songs/chants method incorporated Spanish vocabulary words into a rhythm, rhyme, or song. Over 6 weeks, 20 kindergarten students were taught Spanish vocabulary using these methods. Students were...
