One of the most unique and uniquely odd film I have seen. Considering when and where it was made, the production values are almost unbelievably high. It seems to have been made in occupied France, with the clear intent to blame the Freemasons as dupes and/or masterminds in engineering the outbreak of war. While proving the premise seems like it would be an uphill battle, the film demonstrates great care in citing historical events within France to back this up. Citing Freemason infiltration...

This two reel comedy is not a great film but does feature a young Gloria Swanson, Teddy the Keystone Dog and historically significant "being the very last comedy produced under the Keystone banner." An IMDb reviewer, drednm, wrote... Typical no-plot comedy short from 1917 boasts the great Gloria Swanson as a teenager yachting to India with her family and beau, Bobby Vernon. The Universal Film Manufacturing Company was not known in the silent era as premier producer of motion pictures. Yet, in 1916 they produced a film that could not be made effectively without expensive special effects and special photography. The novel had previously been made as short films in 1907 by Georges Méliès and in 1913 by French company ÃÂclair.) Marshalling the expertise underwater experts Ernest and George Williamson, Universal financed the extensive production which would...

A Beast at Bay was directed by D W Griffith in 1912. It stars Mary Pickford as the girl. These pictures were made so quickly, averaging two a week, that there are always errors that are allowed to pass. For example the tramp who tries to start a fight is almost off camera. But there are also regular advances in film technique. The cutting between the train and the cars, or the point of view shot when the hero looks through the binoculars.

This is a fragment of a film that D W Griffith made in 1909. I wish I had the full video. I would love to finish adding music to it. Using standard red/blue-green 3D glasses, you can view this trip down Market Street filmed in 1906 as if you are actually there! Some of the amazing things you see in this version is the realization that at one point you are definitly going uphill, and the reflections in the water are quite startling. This was done in Adobe Premiere Elements 9, manually (i.e., not run through a pseudo-3D converter program.) It uses all the information in the original film to produce a true 3D effect.

In this first film version of William Shakespeare's classic pastoral comedy, Sir Laurence Olivier stars as Orlando while Elisabeth Bergner is Rosalind, his secret admirer who disguises herself as a boy in order to stay near to him. Nearly all of the actors involved had performed the work on stage previously, adding to the stellar overall performance. A particular highlight is Olivier's magnificent delivery of the famous "All the world's a stage..." monologue.
