NOTE: Only a fragment of this film survives. Here is what remains. By the time this short subject came out, Segundo de Chomón had bested Georges Melies at his own game. His camera magic was as fully developed as Melies. His sense of humor was sharper and his scenes had invaded the real world. Many of the shots of this split-reel short about a bizarre group of tramp musicians who disappear into and out of drums, beach umbrellas and whatnots are shot in the street and the others are on stages...

1937 directed by Joseph Kane starring Gene Autry, Smiley Burnette, Betty Bronson, LeRoy Mason, Charles Middleton, Russell Simpson, Jack Dougherty, Henry Hall and the Tennessee Ramblers. It's Cattle-men versus Turpentiners, with Gene (and a girl) caught in the middle. Lots of singin', shootin' and hard ridin'.

A conjurer in Chinese garb jumps out of a box that's about two feet wide and six inches high. He conjures an assistant from the same box plus a young woman, who then disappears into the box. He continuously picks up the box and shows us the empty inside. Next, he removes many small boxes from the larger box, stacks them on top of each other after making a base row of six or seven. The stacked boxes (magic bricks) become a movie screen, revealing the image of a laughing child. The magician...

HAROLD LLOYD'S WORLD OF COMEDY (1962)   A Harold Lloyd compilation, and (as it were) primer, put out by Art Ross and Lloyd himself in 1962. No substitute for watching the full length, original films, of course, but useful as an introduction. William Thomas Sherman, wts@gunjones.com, http://www.mn-hp.com
