ADULT CONTENT ADVISORY: This grindhouse double feature simulation contains nudity and other content some viewers might find objectionable. The 2am Theater raises its ugly head to present an insomniac double feature dedicated to those who remember Manhattan's row of grindhouse palaces on 42nd Street between Times Square and 8th Avenue. (The whole damn block is now owned by Disney.) Our trip down the sleazy side of memory lane begins with coming attractions and a Betty Page bondage short,...

This simulated wartime double feature program at an American movie theater in the early ‘40s is a tribute, typical of the time, to our gallant British Allies. The road to ultimate victory begins with coming attractions, a Movietone newsreel and a cartoon. The feature presentations are two critically acclaimed dramas of the Royal Navy’s war at sea, “In Which We Serve” and “We Dive at Dawn.” The intermission short subject is the USAAF recruiting film “Winning Your Wings.”

NOTE: Only a fragment of this film survives. Here is what remains. By the time this short subject came out, Segundo de Chomón had bested Georges Melies at his own game. His camera magic was as fully developed as Melies. His sense of humor was sharper and his scenes had invaded the real world. Many of the shots of this split-reel short about a bizarre group of tramp musicians who disappear into and out of drums, beach umbrellas and whatnots are shot in the street and the others are on stages...

The 2am theater sneakly returns to inflict another insomniac double feature on unsuspecting Internet Archive users. This festival of bad acting in sound stage and stock footage jungles begins with the trailer for "Tarzan Escapes" (which doesn't belong here being a good movie and one of the best of MGM's Trazan series) followed by a newsreel. Then Wanda McKay tries to remember her lines in "Jungle Goddess." Unfortunately Amira Moustafa does remember her lines in "Queen...

A conjurer in Chinese garb jumps out of a box that's about two feet wide and six inches high. He conjures an assistant from the same box plus a young woman, who then disappears into the box. He continuously picks up the box and shows us the empty inside. Next, he removes many small boxes from the larger box, stacks them on top of each other after making a base row of six or seven. The stacked boxes (magic bricks) become a movie screen, revealing the image of a laughing child. The magician...

Return with us to those wonderful days of yesteryear when gigantic bugs and antimatter vultures from outer space bigger than battleships ruled the big screens of America. I get choked up just thinking about it. Nature run amok begins with previews of coming disasters and a cartoon. Then it’s 30-year-old teenagers and a monstrous arachnid in “Earth vs the Spider.” Next telepathic crabs would like to make cakes out of us in the Roger Corman classic “Attack of the Crab Monsters.” Where...

Another simulated double feature program in a second-run movie house of the type which no longer exists: The lighthearted entertainment begins with coming attractions and a cartoon. Then in "Half a Sinner" a makeover and a naughty canary send a bored school marm (Heather Angel) and a handsome stranger (John King) off on a rolicking car chase with a corpse in the back seat. This leads to romance for her, him and the canary. The great Constance Collier is part of the fun. Next Diana...

Then in “The Trollenberg Terror” huge eyeballs from outer space decide to squat on the side of a Swiss mountain. Next in “Kronos” a gigantic alien thingy raises hell in Mexico and the US. HAROLD LLOYD'S WORLD OF COMEDY (1962)   A Harold Lloyd compilation, and (as it were) primer, put out by Art Ross and Lloyd himself in 1962. No substitute for watching the full length, original films, of course, but useful as an introduction. William Thomas Sherman, wts@gunjones.com, http://www.mn-hp.com
