"The Inventor Crazybrains and his Wonderful Airship" (Le Dirigeable Fantastique ou le Cauchemar d'un Inventeur) A Jules Verne-like flying airship soars the skies with floating mermaids before out of control fireworks put an end to the crazy inventor's dreams. Unlike the Technicolor wonders that would come decades later, this Georges Méliès film from 1905 achieved its color the old-fashioned way; they were painted on the film by hand.

Le Diable au Couvent, 1899, 3m09s Star Film Catalogue No. 185-7 In a convent, a priest adjusts the position of some chairs before departing. As soon as heâs gone, the devil (Méliès) emerges from the font, and looks around. Spotting a rope dangling from the ceiling, he tugs on it, and a bell rings. He wraps his cloak around himself and turns into a priest. Seven white-clad nuns enter and kneel on the chairs as the priest/devil mounts the pulpit. He begins preaching, and the nuns cross...

L'Homme Orchestre, 1900, 1m21s Star Film Catalogue Nos. 262-263 In many ways a sequel to The Four Troublesome Heads (Un Homme de têtes, 1898), The One-Man Band ups the ante to a considerable degree by featuring no fewer than seven identically-dressed Georges Méliès playing musical instruments and interacting with one another in remarkably convincing synchronisation. Buster Keaton pulled off a similar trick in The Playhouse (1921) with greater technical polish, but Méliès beat him to the...

A man enters a sub and the submarine slowly descends as the crowd watches. Then, you see what is supposed to be an underwater scene. It's done using stop-motion, real fish and painted images. It must have been pretty cool back in 1907--but it looks pretty dated today. Then, things get weird. Starfish turn into dancing girls--yes, dancing girls! Sadly, the ship scares them off! But, at least the guy in the boat gets to see some mermaids--and leaves the boat (and seems to be breathing just...

1920 directed by Tod Browning produced by Carl Laemmle starring Priscilla Dean, Lon Chaney, Wheeler Oakman, Ralph Lewis, E.A. Warren and Stanley Goethals. Chaney plays dual roles in this crime drama set in San Fransico’s Chinatown: as the vicious and seedy “Black” Mike Silva and the subservient and goodly Ah Wing. The second collaboration between Browning and Chaney, the film is considered to be one of the first psychologically driven films of the gangster genre. The film features some...

Sadly the only thing available are just a few fragments running just over a minute. Since there aren't any title cards it's going to be important for the viewer to already know the story. However, with that said, even if you do know the story then it might be hard to pick up on what's actually going on. The first scene has Crusoe fighting off some men coming after him. The second scene has him in a cottage just sitting around. I'm not sure how much of this movie is missing or if it was...

1937 directed by Joseph Kane starring Gene Autry, Smiley Burnette, Betty Bronson, LeRoy Mason, Charles Middleton, Russell Simpson, Jack Dougherty, Henry Hall and the Tennessee Ramblers. It's Cattle-men versus Turpentiners, with Gene (and a girl) caught in the middle. Lots of singin', shootin' and hard ridin'.

The jump cut was the key element in early movie conjurer Georges Méliès bag of tricks, and as he grew more experienced in the production of films so his use of this trick grew more sophisticated. This ingenious little movie shows off Méliès' adeptness to good effect, and it's clear that a lot of imagination has been used in a simple tale. A mischievous devil appears in a hotel room and is just preparing for a snooze when a traveler enters the room. Angered by this intrusion the devil plays...
