More space alien madness from the secret files of the 2am Theater. First there are previews alien attacks to come. Then in “The Trollenberg Terror” huge eyeballs from outer space decide to squat on the side of a Swiss mountain. Next in “Kronos” a gigantic alien thingy raises hell in Mexico and the US. Saturday matinees (kiddie matinees) were a summertime institution in thousands of US movie theaters. They lasted into the late ‘50s when they were finally killed off by Saturday morning children’s TV programming. These three-hour extravaganzas for the cap pistol set consisted of a jumble of multiple cartoons (that often were racially insensitive), serial chapters and one or more feature films that always were B-westerns. Parents and girls (eeu!) weren’t banned, but I don’t remember...

In keeping with the season in the US (and maybe in the UK) the 2am Theater presents two lively political comedies -- one from each side of the Atlantic. First up are previews of coming attractions followed by a cartoon. Then a Scottish bi-election literally goes to the dogs in “Storm in a Teacup,” costarring Rex Harrison and Vivien Leigh. Next in “The Dark Horse,” desperate for a suitable candidate a deadlocked party convention  nominates a political novice who later turns out to be...

Peer into the future as the 2am Theater presents two science fiction adventures. But first there are previews of the world of tomorrow. Then in “The Time Travelers” scientists climb through a window in their cheesy lab, and poof! They’re 100 years into the future! Who knew it could be that easy? Next the post-apocalypse is filled with monsters and other horrors in “Day the World Ended,” the low-budget remake of the low-budget “In the Year 2889.” According to these reports the...

The 2am Theater returns with another pair of Italian horror classics. The night of dark shadows begins with the usual gruesome previews of horrors to come. Then former sword and sandal queen Rosanna Podesta is threatened by an insane killer in “The Virgin of Nuremberg” (AKA “Horror Castle”). Next Babs is back in the reconstructed print of “Terror-Creatures from the Grave,” where spirits of the dead have sadistic murders on their minds. (And a good time was had by all.)

Mexico and Southern California are the playgrounds for this 2am Theater’s menagerie of monstrous nightmares. Tonight’s drive-in scream fest opens with previews of shrieks to come. Then in “The Black Scorpion” Richard Denning and Mara Corday can’t prevent gigantic arachnids from attacking Mexico City. Next in “The Monster That Challenged the World” it’s the mollusks’ turn when gruesome giant slugs eat delicious beach babes and everyone else in the Salton Sea. (bon appetit!)

There’s a crisis at the border! Those damn undocumented space aliens just keep coming and coming! Where will it all end? The evening of alien terror begins with previews of coming catastrophes. Then in “Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster” aliens invade Puerto Rico to shrink-wrap beach babes. Why? Because they can. Next in “Invisible Invaders” John Agar uses loud noises to fight John Carradine and his army of killer zombies, which I believe was the inspiration for heavy metal.

The odyssey begins with coming attractions and a newsreel, followed by Phil Tucker's daring expose of taxi dance joints, "Dance Hall Racket." Then after a fascinating intermission featurette on rubber boots, prepare to be shocked by another mind-bending Phil Tucker expose, "Broadway Jungle," which takes place in Hollywood. No death threats please.

Naval battle sequence from "Old Ironsides" (1926);  starring Charles Farrell, Wallace Beery, Esther Ralston; set in the War with Tripoli circa 1804. The action is overly-hyper and brazenly inauthentic, yet here and there some small but nice historical touches interspersed amid the Hollywood-brand chaos and riot.
