“Strange mix of comedy and drama” “Pleasantly surprised” “Suffers from mood swings” “Charming performance” (IMDB reviews quotes). It tries to be a romantic comedy; it tries be a political drama; it tries to be a screwball comedy; it tries to be a crime drama, and although it’s not quite any of these things, and in spite of the flaws in its bipolar screenplay, it is an entertaining movie with a solid cast and good A-feature production values. Go figure. IMDB rating 6.1....

For any surviving Rex Bell fans out there, he stars as the long-lost son of a ruthless cattle baron in this low-impact B-western with more plot than action. Good supporting cast and adequate production values. An entertaining oater that won’t raise your blood pressure. IMDB rating 6.4. Directed by Robert Hill Released in 1936. Complete print. CAST NOTE: Rex Bell may not have been the greatest on-screen hero, but off-screen he was the cowboy who finally tamed Clara Bow by marrying her.

The 2am Theater presents a bone-chilling and funny-bone-tickling simulated double feature program at a second-run theater in the ‘60s. The chills and chuckles begin with coming attractions. Then we’re off to sunny Italy where in “Curse of the Faceless Man” a two-thousand-year-old gladiator comes back to life because he has the hots for a certain reincarnated cutie. (Hey, it could happen!) Next we’re off to sunny Mexico to meet evil Baron Vitelius and his monstrous killer tongue in...

“Good but short’ “My favorite Wayne B” “Highly recommended” (IMDB reviews quotes). This print is sharper and with better contrast than the existing IA copies. After riding for the Pony Express John Wayne starts a stagecoach line, brings the telegraph to his town, saves a telegraph construction camp from poisoning, beats the bad guys, gets the girl, finishes up with a rip-roarin’ stagecoach race and all in only 54 minuets. Which is a good example of why for action and production...

Its cast of matinee westerns stars (Ken Maynard, Hoot Gibson and Bob Steele) make this ordinary Monogram oater more interesting than it would be otherwise. “Awfully predictable” “Ultimately unsatisfying” (IMDB reviews quotes). Hollywood’s idea of upper-class sophistication in a poorly directed, stodgy drawing room romance. The claim it’s a comedy doesn’t match the reality. Don’t blame the cast for this misfire. Recommended only as an example of what was wrong with some early talkies. IMDB rating 6.2. Directed by Paul L Stein. Released in 1930. Complete print.

This is another challenge for armchair detectives in the form of a simulated mystery double feature program at second-run theater in the ‘30s. The hunt for clues begins with coming attractions and a cartoon. The first feature presentation is the classic locked-room murder mystery “The Kennel Murder Case” staring William Powell as Philo Vance. The intermission short is the mini-whodunit “The Trans-Atlantic Mystery” with Donald Meek. Then the guests are dropping like Vermont house flies...

“A true curiosity” (IMDB review quote). This crime melodrama is a fascinating example of how as late as 1930 some actors and directors were still learning to adapt to the medium of sound-film. It also is a good example of how a bad movie can be a lot of fun. Ned Sparks’ over-the-top performance as a crotchety old crime author steals the show. A remake of the 1914 silent “The Conspiracy.” IMDB rating 5.7. Directed by Christy Cabanne. Released in 1930. Complete print. AKA...
