This crime drama about a playboy lawyer trying to make good as an assistant DA should be used in film schools as a textbook example of how not to direct and edit a feature film. Don’t blame the cast members. Their task was hopeless. The IMDB 5.4 rating is extremely generous. Directed by Vin Moore. Released in 1936.   2 minutes are missing.

“The acting is what is frightening” (IMBD review quote). A mediocre cast that includes many non-professionals in an absurd screenplay meant to cash in on the ‘50s reincarnation craze. (Remember Bridey Murphy?) It’s stitched together by lackluster, static direction. On the plus side some of the NYC location cinematography is pretty good. If it wasn’t so tedious it might have been so-bad-it’s-good fun. IMDB rating 5.0. Produced and directed by W Lee Wider. Released in 1956. Complete...

Saturday matinees (kiddie matinees) were a summertime institution in thousands of US movie theaters. They lasted into the late ‘50s when they were finally killed off by Saturday morning children’s TV programming. These three-hour extravaganzas for the cap pistol set consisted of a jumble of multiple cartoons (that often were racially insensitive), serial chapters and one or more feature films that always were B-westerns. Parents and girls (eeu!) weren’t banned, but I don’t remember...

In keeping with the season in the US (and maybe in the UK) the 2am Theater presents two lively political comedies -- one from each side of the Atlantic. “Getting a lot out of 56 minutes” “Rare Anthony Mann film” “Creepy Freudian Gothic” (IMDB reviews quotes) A most unusual second feature mystery in which a WW2 marine receives love letters from a girl who has never been seen alive. Discovering the truth becomes a descent into madness. Good compact cast of only four main characters. However Helen Thimig’s performance as a woman who will stop at nothing steals the show. “Fast-paced, witty and atmospheric” “Vastly underrated” “Early gem by the master of suspense” (IMDB reviews quotes). A worthy suspense drama in which a British couple’s daughter is kidnapped to prevent their exposure of an assassination plot. The excellent cast includes Peter Lorre’s first appearance in a Hitchcock Film. Remade in 1956. It would make an interesting double feature with Hitch’s “Sabotage.” IMDB rating 6.9. There’s a crisis at the border! Those damn undocumented space aliens just keep coming and coming! Where will it all end? The evening of alien terror begins with previews of coming catastrophes. Then in “Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster” aliens invade Puerto Rico to shrink-wrap beach babes. Why? Because they can. Next in “Invisible Invaders” John Agar uses loud noises to fight John Carradine and his army of killer zombies, which I believe was the inspiration for heavy metal.

“Nicely done with flavorsome atmosphere” "Highly entertaining, well made mystery” “What a hoot!” (IMDB reviews quotes). This second of two Colombia Thatcher Colt mysteries comes with a hefty dose of ‘30s racism. There is big trouble in a circus that has as one of its main attractions a large group of black cannibals. A genteel British crime drama that regardless of what some of its reviewers claim really isn’t film noir. Oskar Homolka leads its competent cast. The production values are adequate.
