A gamebook is a work of fiction that allows the reader to participate in the story by making effective choices. The narrative branches along various paths through the use of numbered paragraphs or pages. Gamebooks are sometimes informally called choose your own adventure books or CYOA, which is the title of one particular long and popular series by Bantam Books. Legally, Choose Your Own Adventure continues to be a trademark in current use. There are three types of gamebooks. The first is the...

From the foreword: Jason Morningstar, a man who clearly understands the value of an evocative name, got the idea of harnessing the awesome might of Story-Games.com, a community of story-oriented gamers, to put together a whole book of name lists drawn from different cultures. This volume is the fruit of that effort, and I have to say I’m impressed with the results. I knew about the project, but until Jason asked me to write this introduction I hadn’t realized that in amongst the more...

Skyrealms of Jorune was an early Role Playing game that brought a different flavor to science fiction RPG and raised the level of presentation in art and production. Created by Andrew Leker and Miles Teves for a High School English class, the game had three editions. The boxed set second edition marked a high water mark in game publishing. The last of Jorune was seen in the early 1990s but fans around the world have continued to feed into the mythos.  A couple of items are missing (such as...

This book is a collection of biological, psychic, and supernatural mutations, all grouped into tables so results can be randomly selected, using dice. These tables can be used to generate random mutations and mutant creatures, or the descriptions of these mutations can be used as an influence to spur creative thinking.

Software design patterns do not form the basis for any software theory, although they may exploit theoretical concepts such as object orientation. Similarly, RPG design patterns will not likely form the basis for any new RPG theory, such as Gamism/Narrativism/Simulationism (GNS), Game/Drama/Simulation (GDS), The Big Model, or any other. (If you don’t know what any of those terms mean, don’t worry, you don’t need them to understand this book. If you want to learn more about RPG theory,...

The Basic Fantasy Role-Playing Game is a rules-light game system modeled on the classic RPG rules of the early 1980's. Though based loosely on the d20 SRD v3.5, Basic Fantasy RPG has been written largely from scratch to replicate the look, feel, and mechanics of the early RPG game systems. It is suitable for those who are fans of "old-school" game mechanics. Basic Fantasy RPG is simple enough for children in perhaps second or third grade to play, yet still has enough depth for adults...

A complete pen-and-paper roleplaying game. For some, Risus is a handy “emergency” RPG for spur-of-the-moment one-shots and rapid character creation. For others, it’s a reliable campaign system supporting years of play. For others still, it’s a strange little pamphlet with stick figures. With this edition, Risus celebrates not only two decades of existence, but two decades of life, bolstered by an enthusiastic global community devoted to expanding it, celebrating it, sharing it, and...

For two decades, self-taught mathematician Henry E. A booklet of misconceptions and outright lies about  D&D.  Here's what you will take away from this little manifesto: Adolf Hitler is described in the  Dungeon Master's Guide  as "exhibit(ing) true  D&D  charisma" Jesus Christ is listed as a  D&D  deity, in an act of unspeakable blasphemy. "Many of the spells, incantations, symbols, and protective measures are genuine occultic techniques." "At the very least, anyone familiar with FRP rule books is...
