The first show of 1973
The Grateful Dead started this show at the beginning of 1973, right after the New Year's countdown > Around & Around. So, you see, this is actually a '73 show. Please take note.

we can share the wine..
I still have a bunch of NYE shows to get to but somehow
always gravitate to this show.
This show besides reminding us how hot 1972 was
is technically the 1st show of 1973.
The way things worked out this is the only New Year's eve box of rain in the 70's.
(I know they did at least one more in the 80's on NYE)
Hey Radio DJ-just because you have the ability to talk over the flow, does NOT mean you should.
They spend a good long time getting primed in Set One
which is already after midnight.
While this show is pretty mellow it is also really high intensity in the jams.
PITB is a good indicator Set 2 is gonna be a peach.
Second Set is a great bridge into 1973
The outro jam out of Half Step is so laid back.
Dropping Cryptical really freed up TOO
it totally steals the show..

Wish I could give it 7 stars.
After all, if your random 82 show (in the year of 7 minute Playings and super fast tempos) is worth 5, this one has to be worth 15! Among the greatest shows they've ever done. The Truckin>Other One sequence contains so many different segments of jamming, going from boogaloo rhythm to deep space to meltdown jamming and eventually back into the standard Other One jam. Then check out the outro jam, reminiscent of the Cryptical reprise. Worst kept secret of 72 -- the Other One shows are even more exploratory and even wilder than the Dark Star shows.

my first show
This was my first show. I had recently moved to Berkeley from the East Coast, and some guys we met in a bar gave us their two extra tickets to the show in exchange for a ride to Winterland-they were on acid and couldn't drive. We got to Winterland in time for the New Riders but unfortunately my friend and I had taken Quaaludes to celebrate the New Year (bad choice for a celebration) and had trouble staying awake throughout the whole night. I do remember the guy up on the lighting rig, and many years later and totally randomly met a woman who'd been that guy's roommate at the time.

The sound is great!!
The people who complain about"sterile" sound either don't know how to operate an EQ or they have been eating the brown acid again. Haha.
By far one of my favorite of the many I have listened to here. I literally had to lay down to absorb the meltdown from hell in The Other One.

Interesting story about this show
Sometime around 3 am while the Dead were thoroughly steeped in their eerie snake music, I got sort of tired and started looking around. For some reason, I started rolling my head around to stretch it and, looking ceiling ward, noticed this guy standing on this thin little beam way up above the stage. He's just teetering there hanging on for dear life.
I thought he was part of the lighting crew and thought no more about it, but then I just kept looking back up there and, after awhile, I realized he was not part of the crew. Suddenly I grokked at the fact that that guy had somehow slipped in through the vents in the ceiling.
Minutes later I could see that on both ends of the beam there were techies motioning to him to come toward them, but the guy was frozen in place. They were trying to throw a rope to him, but they couldn't get him to grab it--so tenuous was his hold on life. He had gotten himself into a fix from which he could not extract himself.
Eventually, Bob Weir stops the music and says, "We gotta get outta here on account of we're having some problems up above."
thought I'd share that with anyone looking at this show.

another tape I had & lost @ some point
I'd recording it over at least 2 different GD Hour shows & ended up with a good bit of 2nd set. I do not recall hearing Dave Crosby's contribution on the tape I made, or David Gans mentioning that he was present @ this show. This did however remain as one of the top jamming moments in GD history to my mind, and it was nice to hear the rest of the show here @ LMA.

As one other reviewer mentioned, this show is the PERFECT transition into 1973 where things would only get better. No Eyes, Sunshine or Weather Report yet, but the playing is extraordinary as Jerry is finding his groove. The Playin' is awesome as is the much mentioned Truckin sequence thru Morning Dew. I think Jerry was still playing the Strat at this time, although I could be wrong, but the tone he's getting is killer. Listen to the feedback and reverb he's getting as Truckin morphs into O1. I always thought the Tiger was Jerry's best sounding guitar......the Stratocaster is a close second.

New Years Magic!
This is the One.
The cleanest sound, tight playing, great levels on the instruments, no Pigpen, but the band makes up in fine form. Look for the monster Truckin-Other One-Morning Dew to really bridge the 1972-73 gap. The band is on the verge of outer space! Can't say enough, even the KSAN mix is killer!!

A show for all time
The sound, the energy, right out of the New Year's count down rockin' out on Around and Around (check March 1971 for another top shelf version). The Truckin' Other One jam is drop jaw head bending. Every song is perfectly played, and I don't hear any of this sound inferiority others mention. Maybe the hearing is going, but at least I'm enjoying the ride! Grab this, then dl the shorten version of the NRPS set from their area on Archive. Good God, Have Mercy!

Complaining about the sound quality is ridiculous. This show is amazing and the sound is good enough to make it worth the listen. The boys finished off a great year with a strong perfprmance. I love it!
Highlight for me is Truckin' - Dew.

My First Show
I was so happy to find this. I was 16 when I saw this show. The interlude between Truckin' and Morning Dew is really special. David Crosby sat in on some of this but I have no idea what.

What a Jam is right on!
Between Bobby's last "Get back truckin' on....ahhhwww" to "Spanish lady..." is over 43 (yes 43) straight minutes of multi-dimensional jamming! The Playin' jam is among the best ever as well. The show combined with the sound quality earn the 5 stars.

What a Jam
Truckin' through Morning Dew is an absolute mindblower. Set is a 5, sound is a 3 or 4.

For some reason, I've never really warmed up to the mix on this one. It sounds kind of "sterile" if that makes any sense. It's a fine show, but I still prefer NYE '71 to this. 3 ana half, but I'll give it 4

only check this show out if your ready to dig the best new years show the dead ever gave. what a closer to a wicked year man! the second the count down dinishes and the dead are rocking Around and around i knew i was in for a treat. please, you owe it to yourself to download this show. the truckin>other one sequence is nothing short of fantastic. the band is ON ON ON tonight.

Definitely an all-time best show! Playing is on fire, celebrating a years worth of fiery improv. Truckin' is h/e, leading into a surreal The Other One. Phil and Bill open this monster version up nicely with Jerry finishing it off with his "enlightenment" jam at 20:51. Listen

There are so many great new 72 shows appearing that I want to rave on recently. Like 7/18, 8/24, 10/28 and the Winterland run in Dec. But this one still shines out. The last show of the first truly incredible year in Dead history (with apologies to 1969)and the band plays like the world is about to end. Great versions of Box of Rain, Candyman and Tennessee Jed, with a well jammed Playin. The Truckin>Other One>Morning Dew with Crosby (on 12 string-listen carefully) easily rivals the Europe 72 version, and gets wild and furious, then blasts off to the cosmos. A distinctive version you won't forget. Get this one out on New Year's Eve and rock out. An experience for the body and mind.
Their last New Year's show until 1976!
Dr. Flashback ;-)

12/31/72 Pre-FM Vault Reels > DAT
More complete significant upgrade over the previously circulating Pre-FM KSAN Reel [> DAT > SHN SHN > WAV (Shntool) > SHN V3 (mkwACT) by email@example.com]. The new Vault reels' volume is somewhat low but pure & clean. Standout Playin' & 55 min. Truckin' > Other One. If I had a top 10 list, this show would probably be on it.
