This unit was developed to help students gain a sense of personal identity by examining their heritage. This is accomplished through a study of their genealogical beginnings, their county, and their ancestors' way of life. Part I of the unit engages students in activities investigating their background such as writing an autobiography, interviewing adult relatives, studying local folklore, and creating an ancestors gallery. Part II of the unit involves students in a study of their county....

This paper traces the early history of the Aharonov-Bohm effect. It appears to have been `discovered' at least three times to my knowledge before the defining paper of Aharonov and Bohm appeared in 1959. The first hint of the effect appears in Germany in 1939, immediately disappearing from sight in those troubled times. It reappeared in a paper in 1949, ten years before the defining paper appeared. Here I report the background to the early evolution of this effect, presenting first hand...

We present an analysis of comet activity based on the Spitzer Space Telescope component of the Survey of the Ensemble Physical Properties of Cometary Nuclei. We show that the survey is well suited to measuring the activity of Jupiter-family comets at 3-7 AU from the Sun. Dust was detected in 33 of 89 targets (37 +/- 6%), and we conclude that 21 comets (24 +/- 5%) have morphologies that suggest ongoing or recent cometary activity. Our dust detections are sensitivity limited, therefore our...

This paper investigates the universality and robustness of scaling laws for urban systems, according to the work by Bettencourt, Lobo and West among others, using England and Wales as a case study. Initial results employing the demarcations for cities from the European Statistical Commission digress from the expected patterns. We therefore develop a method for producing multiple city definitions based on both morphological and functional characteristics, determined by population density and...

This article is from Acta Veterinaria Scandinavica , volume 55 . Abstract Background: In a stable of eight horses in Northern Iceland, six horses presented with clinical signs, such as ataxia and reduced appetite, leading to euthanasia of one severely affected horse. Serological investigations revealed no evidence of active equine herpes virus type 1 infection, a common source of central nervous system disease in horses, nor equine arteritis virus and West Nile virus.
