The Harriet Gladman embroidery, made c1838-1841, is part of the Sussex Archaeological Society’s collection and is on display in the Priest House at West Hoathly, West Sussex, England. As well as being of interest to textile historians it is a historical document, telling the story of a young woman’s marriage, the loss of a firstborn child and the comfort she found in religion. It is ever more poignant as it was probably used for the child’s short 9 weeks of life.

The history of the Greenleaf Branch in Goldsboro, North Carolina starts with missionaries during the period between 1896 and 1900 when approximately 100 people joined the Church. The missionaries began visiting in the homes around Goldsboro in 1900. The Elders first held Sunday School in a rented storehouse. This Sunday School was re-organized on the 8th of November 1896. On June 6, 1897 the Sunday School was re-organized with Stephen Henry Price, as Superintendent. Later the members held...

Much of the concern with young people's historical knowledge centres on factual attainment or disciplinary skills. However, relatively little attention is paid to the relevance that young people attribute to history and how they use the past, and various social representations of history, to relate to the present. Research in this realm tends to emphasize the impact of collective memory narratives on individuals, rather than individuals' agency in using them. In this article, I will examine the...

Ultrametric trees are trees whose leaves lie at the same distance from the root. They are used to model the genealogy of a population of particles co-existing at the same point in time. We show how the boundary of an ultrametric tree, like any compact ultrametric space, can be represented in a simple way via the so-called comb metric. We display a variety of examples of random combs and explain how they can be used in applications. In particular, we review some old and recent results regarding...

This paper discusses variance estimation in sequential Monte Carlo methods, alternatively termed particle filters. The variance estimator that we propose is a natural modification of that suggested by H. P. Chan and T. L. Lai [A general theory of particle filters in hidden Markov models and some applications. Ann. Statist., 41(6):2877-2904, 2013], which allows the variance to be estimated in a single run of the particle filter by tracing the genealogical history of the particles. However, due...

This article extends the discussion of critical methodologies in education, arguing that critical work must exhibit both an explicit orientation toward truth and social justice and an engagement with how theoretical considerations of the good connect to material practices. More specifically, we center Colin Koopman's notion of genealogical pragmatism to suggest that critical work must focus on both problematization and reconstruction of the often dire circumstances that characterize our...

Last Year at Betty and Bob's: A Novelty is the first in a series of novellas emerging from a writing practice that taps the cusp of consciousness between dreaming and waking. A storyline, or genealogy, tinted a shade of RGB blue, is fashioned by thinking through the felt unthought of this between space. A fabulation, an anarchive of what passes through. Lucid dreaming of this type is rife with allusions to conceptual and material goings-on, manifesting in awkward imaginaries. The dream personas...

Using an analytic informed by Nietzschean genealogy and systems theory, this paper explains how two conceptual structures (the emancipatory binary and the progressive triad), along with standard citation practices in academic journal writing, function to sustain and regenerate a progressive perspective within social studies education scholarship. The Study Process Questionnaire (SPQ) continues to be applied in a wide range of pedagogical situations. However, the question remains as to how well a researcher understands the conceptual basis behind the tool they choose. This essay provides a compact and comprehensive view of the conceptual basis for the development of the original SPQ, and the later revised version (R-SPQ-2F), and offers a way for a researcher to quickly be informed on the concepts underpinning the tool, enabling the...

We ask the question "when will natural selection on a gene in a spatially structured population cause a detectable trace in the patterns of genetic variation observed in the contemporary population?". We focus on the situation in which 'neighbourhood size', that is the effective local population density, is small. The genealogy relating individuals in a sample from the population is embedded in a spatial version of the ancestral selection graph and through applying a diffusive scaling...

Phylodynamics seeks to estimate effective population size fluctuations from molecular sequences of individuals sampled from a population of interest. One way to accomplish this task formulates an observed sequence data likelihood exploiting a coalescent model for the sampled individuals' genealogy and then integrating over all possible genealogies via Monte Carlo or, less efficiently, by conditioning on one genealogy estimated from the sequence data. However, when analyzing sequences sampled...

The propensity of looking into genealogy, caste-atrocities, social boycott, and the ambition of upward (caste) mobility are consecutive features of rural societies across the country. On the one hand, the rural society has been represented in long time by deep-rooted casteism that creates kind of blind perception or faith towards his own caste and mythological beliefs for showing the pseudo superiority, and its result is being reflected by irrational practices like Biradari Bhoj (caste oriented...

We consider a branching population where individuals live and reproduce independently. Their lifetimes are i.i.d. and they give birth at a constant rate b. The genealogical tree spanned by this process is called a splitting tree, and the population counting process is a homogeneous, binary Crump-Mode-Jagers process. We suppose that mutations affect individuals independently at a constant rate $\\theta$ during their lifetimes, under the infinite-alleles assumption: each new mutation gives a new...

We destroy a finite tree of size $n$ by cutting its edges one after the other and in uniform random order. Informally, the associated cut-tree describes the genealogy of the connected components created by this destruction process. We provide a general criterion for the convergence of the rescaled cut-tree in the Gromov-Prohorov topology to an interval endowed with the Euclidean distance and a certain probability measure, when the underlying tree has a small height of order $o(\sqrt{n})$. We study the evolution of genealogies of a population of individuals, whose type frequencies result in an interacting Fleming-Viot process on $\Z$. We construct and analyze the genealogical structure of the population in this genealogy-valued Fleming-Viot process as a marked metric measure space, with each individual carrying its spatial location as a mark. We then show that its time evolution converges to that of the genealogy of a continuum-sites stepping stone model on $\R$, if space and...

A first step in this direction is to translate them into the natural language of the students. Three-dimensional convex bodies can be classified in terms of the number and stability types of critical points on which they can balance at rest on a horizontal plane. For typical bodies these are nondegenerate maxima, minima, and saddle-points, the numbers of which provide a primary classification. Secondary and tertiary classifications use graphs to describe orbits connecting these critical points in the gradient vector field associated with each body. In previous work it was shown that...

We consider a model of a population of fixed size $N$ undergoing selection. Each individual acquires beneficial mutations at rate $\mu_N$, and each beneficial mutation increases the individual's fitness by $s_N$. Each individual dies at rate one, and when a death occurs, an individual is chosen with probability proportional to the individual's fitness to give birth. Under certain conditions on the parameters $\mu_N$ and $s_N$, we show that the genealogy of the population can be described by the...

The main object of this course given in Hammamet (December 2014) is the so-called Galton-Watson process. We introduce in the first chapter of this course the framework of discrete random trees. We then use this framework to construct GW trees that describe the genealogy of a GW process. It is very easy to recover the GW process from the GW tree as it is just the number of individuals at each generation. We then give alternative proofs of classical results on GW processes using the tree...

The problem of genealogy of permutations has been solved partially by Stefan (odd order) and Acosta-Hum\'anez \& Bernhardt (power of two). It is well known that Sharkovskii's theorem shows the relationship between the cardinal of the set of periodic points of a continuous map, but simple permutations will show the behaviour of those periodic points. Recently Abdulla et al studied the structure of minimal $4n+2$-orbits of the continuous endomorphisms on the real line. This paper studies some...

The genealogy at a single locus of a constant size $N$ population in equilibrium is given by the well-known Kingman's coalescent. When considering multiple loci under recombination, the ancestral recombination graph encodes the genealogies at all loci in one graph. For a continuous genome $G$, we study the tree-valued process $(T^N_u)_{u\in G}$ of genealogies along the genome in the limit $N\to\infty$. Encoding trees as metric measure spaces, we show convergence to a tree-valued process with...
