A book of transcriptions/abstracts of all the known AKEHURST Wills in East Sussex 1541-1858. The wills in the book have been thoroughly indexed (names, locations, etc) and in addition, each will includes a family tree placing the will in context and showing how other wills are connected. The trees are based on many years of research using parish records and the information gleaned from these Akehurst wills.

Judaism makes the bold argument that the very concept of a religion of ‘Judaism’ is an invention of the Christian church. The intellectual journey of world-renowned Talmud scholar Daniel Boyarin, this book will change the study of “Judaism”—an essential key word in Jewish Studies—as we understand it today. Boyarin argues that although the world treats the word “Judaism” as appropriate for naming an alleged religion of the Jews, it is in fact a Christian theological concept...

The Anthropocene thesis invokes the ‘enormous geological power’ of industrialism: driven by hydrocarbon combustion, manifest in planetary heating. Yet political theory has proceeded as if the organisation of geological power were incidental to history. Geological agency, we submit, is precisely what mining industries are organised to achieve, materially and politically. We propose mineral sovereignty as a term of method to analyse geological power in its legible, institutional and...

The Harriet Gladman embroidery, made c1838-1841, is part of the Sussex Archaeological Society’s collection and is on display in the Priest House at West Hoathly, West Sussex, England. As well as being of interest to textile historians it is a historical document, telling the story of a young woman’s marriage, the loss of a firstborn child and the comfort she found in religion. It is ever more poignant as it was probably used for the child’s short 9 weeks of life.

The history of the Greenleaf Branch in Goldsboro, North Carolina starts with missionaries during the period between 1896 and 1900 when approximately 100 people joined the Church. The missionaries began visiting in the homes around Goldsboro in 1900. The Elders first held Sunday School in a rented storehouse. This Sunday School was re-organized on the 8th of November 1896. On June 6, 1897 the Sunday School was re-organized with Stephen Henry Price, as Superintendent. Later the members held...

Much of the concern with young people's historical knowledge centres on factual attainment or disciplinary skills. However, relatively little attention is paid to the relevance that young people attribute to history and how they use the past, and various social representations of history, to relate to the present. Research in this realm tends to emphasize the impact of collective memory narratives on individuals, rather than individuals' agency in using them. In this article, I will examine the...

Ultrametric trees are trees whose leaves lie at the same distance from the root. They are used to model the genealogy of a population of particles co-existing at the same point in time. We show how the boundary of an ultrametric tree, like any compact ultrametric space, can be represented in a simple way via the so-called comb metric. We display a variety of examples of random combs and explain how they can be used in applications. In particular, we review some old and recent results regarding...

This paper discusses variance estimation in sequential Monte Carlo methods, alternatively termed particle filters. The variance estimator that we propose is a natural modification of that suggested by H. P. Chan and T. L. Lai [A general theory of particle filters in hidden Markov models and some applications. Ann. Statist., 41(6):2877-2904, 2013], which allows the variance to be estimated in a single run of the particle filter by tracing the genealogical history of the particles. However, due...

This article extends the discussion of critical methodologies in education, arguing that critical work must exhibit both an explicit orientation toward truth and social justice and an engagement with how theoretical considerations of the good connect to material practices. More specifically, we center Colin Koopman's notion of genealogical pragmatism to suggest that critical work must focus on both problematization and reconstruction of the often dire circumstances that characterize our...

Last Year at Betty and Bob's: A Novelty is the first in a series of novellas emerging from a writing practice that taps the cusp of consciousness between dreaming and waking. A storyline, or genealogy, tinted a shade of RGB blue, is fashioned by thinking through the felt unthought of this between space. A fabulation, an anarchive of what passes through. Lucid dreaming of this type is rife with allusions to conceptual and material goings-on, manifesting in awkward imaginaries. The dream personas...

Using an analytic informed by Nietzschean genealogy and systems theory, this paper explains how two conceptual structures (the emancipatory binary and the progressive triad), along with standard citation practices in academic journal writing, function to sustain and regenerate a progressive perspective within social studies education scholarship. Exemplary essays, drawn from social studies education scholarship from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s are presented and examined in reference to the...

The Study Process Questionnaire (SPQ) continues to be applied in a wide range of pedagogical situations. However, the question remains as to how well a researcher understands the conceptual basis behind the tool they choose. This essay provides a compact and comprehensive view of the conceptual basis for the development of the original SPQ, and the later revised version (R-SPQ-2F), and offers a way for a researcher to quickly be informed on the concepts underpinning the tool, enabling the...
