Describes the history of quarrying activities in the Sonoma Mountain range southeast of Santa Rosa, California during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Basalt (basaltic andesite) was mined primarily for paving stones and supplied the growing city of San Francisco as well as local streets in Santa Rosa. Many of the quarries are still evident in Annadel State Park, which includes much of the quarried area.
