The GLBT Historical Society collects, preserves, exhibits and makes accessible to the public materials and knowledge to support and promote understanding of LGBTQ history, culture and arts in all their diversity. Founded in 1985, we are recognized internationally as a leader in the field of LGBTQ public history. The GLBT Historical Society is a registered 501(c)3 educational nonprofit organization.

Description :  Dan White, who in 1978 assassinated Harvey Milk and George Moscone, served five years of his seven-year sentence and was paroled on January 7, 1984. In a controversial verdict that led to the coining of the legal slang "Twinkie defense", White was convicted of manslaughter rather than murder in the deaths of Milk and Moscone. It began in 1985 in part to show the public the South of Market neighborhood was already home to strong community and that this community was still active and organized in spite of the AIDS epidemic. The play opened in Ollie's bar in Oakland, California in 1981.
