This set is partly from a 27th generation copy of an Underground Flavas tape out of West London and partly from a rip which had been shared on the web a few years back [and subsequently been deaded in terms of linkage]. We’ve bumped the EQ in Izotope, compressed it a touch and tweaked it for your listening pleasure. This show is a great example of why Stretch is held is such high esteem by his peers within the industry as well as the listeners, he may have been a DJ and a host, but the actual...

What do we have here then? Oh just some insanely early WKCR action from back when the show was in it's infant stages and Stretch was still going by the name of DJ Skinny Bones... (quality isn't great for the first few minutes but settles down by the time the music starts) Although tons of tapes from the duo's 8 year run have been posted online these sessions from 1990 have proved hard to come by. Even Stretch and Bob themselves have been asking for them, so this was quite a find.  Shout out to...

Stretch's Comments (on January 18th, 2007): "I've never listened to this show, with the exception of snippets that KBL had on a tape. On it, you'll find my main stain Crazy Legs of Rock Steady, an unsigned group named Ruffneck Bastards, The Coup, Casual from Hiero and a funny as ever Rhythm X a.k.a. Kool Keith, who rhymes, takes over the hosting duties and then takes phone calls with us for the last hour or so. Maybe tomorrow night / Friday morning at one a.m., you could press play and...

Flush had a series of tapes recorded in the mid-80s labeled simply with a number. This one is number 4 in that set. It's a short one, at only about 25 minutes total. Side A features some nice blends (courtesy of Jeff Mills, I believe) with "Dance to the Drummer's Beat," "Jamonit," and other assorted breaks and samples. Side B keeps it going with all sorts of electro and early hip-hop tracks, including "Rockit," coming in and out of the mix.

This may be the first special edition 11-hour episode that the Raw Deal crew did (though they did do a six hour New Year's Eve show at one point). Celebrating their five-year anniversary, this special episode started at 1pm, but my tape starts at about 2:15pm. If my school day ended right about 2, I likely got home, came straight upstairs, and hit record. At the end of the 2:15pm side, a funny moment occurs when they play Busy Bee's "Suicide" and refer to him as "one of the...

This classic is a 34 year old recording of the Frankie Crocker breakfast show on WBLS!  Just like Grace Jones' The Apple Stretching, this is a beautiful snapshot of early morning early 80s New York, this time, from 1983. There may only be one Rap tune on this tape, but the recording is about much more than just one track, it's an illustration to younger generations, of how things used to be, as well as bein' a throwback to simpler times for the older listeners. In 2017, so many people are all...

Here's another show from Funkmaster Flex. Notice that within a year's time the Chuck Chillout Show had moved from 98.7 KISS FM to WBLS. A solid show with lots of great tracks including some of the brand new hits of the time. I'm not sure if it's still in the show cause I edit out most commercial segments and chatter but Chuck Chillout accidentally calls Charles Oakley-- Charles Barkley. RRR are extremely pleased to offer another previously unheard* Stretch & Bobbito Show from 1991. This is a full 90 minute tape, tweaked and remastered to make that compressed FM vibe, sound as bumpin as poss. Filled with treats from the time, all expertly mixed, blended and cut the f**k up by one of the finest DJs on the planet. DJ Stretch Armstrong takes doubles of virtually every tune, perfectly and succinctly tearin em all up, while Kurious and Bobbito go ‘live to five’ with studio...

Red Alert gets busy live on NYC radio in November 1992. Lots of treats on this plus a couple of songs I didn't recognise - can anyone ID the 'Give Me The Night' sampling track on side A? I knew this was gonna be a good when the adverts at the start included a St Ides commercial by Willie D. That was (surprisingly) followed by Red dropping 'Secrets (Of Success)' by the UK's own Cookie Crew and then into some Ice Cube, Nice & Smooth and Brand Nubian. On side B you'll find Scarface, Gang...

In the UK for promo on his Shoot the Pump mix LP, the DJ that used to get shout-outs from Mr Magic and Kool DJ Red Alert, The White Whiz DJ Riz is the highlight of this show IMO. The Flip Squads’ finest justs destroys all manner of styles in this set that crosses all the era and genres of ill Hip-Hop and Rap. Crooklyn Clan member Riz is one of the tightest DJs ever and this set attests to that. A 17-year-old Aaliyah also appears on this rare full 3 hour show, available here remastered and...

This is not just another old school radio show. The operating room shows from Dr. Dre are very hard to find. And this one is imo very special. It contains an interview with KRS and Scott La Rock (6 months before his death) about the bridge wars, one of the important chapters of hip hop history. Scott is dissing Mr Magic, Shan and the Juice Crew and KRS is talking about The bridge and the reason to write 'the bridge is over'. This is like a time capsule back to 1987. - Dutch

On March 12, 1992–a week after doing an extended six-hour episode of Raw Deal that featured The Genius–G did a full 11 hour show (and then some since DJ X didn’t show up, either) starting at 1pm and going until midnight. Eazy’s car broke down in Philly, so G was running the show for the entire set. A Tribe Called Quest is supposed to roll into the studio, but it doesn’t seem to happen. Features lots of bugging out, particularly as the night nears an end and the studio is full.  Big...

I've only ever had a couple of Wake Up Show tapes in my possession so was happy to see this one in the last batch of cassettes that Tobes hooked me up with. I was particularly pleased to find this treat on there though: Guru stops by the show to do a quick interview (just before Moment Of Truth came out) and then drops a few verses alongside a relatively unknown Eminem, before Defari steps up to the mic and then the Beatnuts get involved. Good times. Do things like this still happen anywhere...

Here  is a show from the North of England, specifically Manchester. The same city electronic music artists 808 State were from, they also hosted a show on Sunset in the 80s, under the Spinmasters moniker, before becoming 808. Liam Howlett from the Prodigy also presented a dance show on Sunset. Along with local legend Stu Allan and his hip-hop themed Bus Diss show on KEY103FM, Leaky Fresh and Owen D were Manchester DJs that started as The Master Jam MD’s in the early 80s. They'd played clubs...

Here's Bobbito (aka Cucumber Slice) and Lord Sear on WKCR back in February 1998. Supernatural and Megahertz are in the studio freestyling, and theres as some dope late 90s indie joints by the likes of Polyrhythm Addicts, High & Mighty and Capital D. There's a Black Eyed Peas tune on there as well which just seems weird now... Big up MK for the original tape. The heads over at the T.R.O.Y forum are working on collating all the Stretch & Bobbito shows in chronological order. If anyone out...

There aren’t many classic live Rap battles that are recognised worldwide; Kool Moe Dee vs Busy Bee [ There’s one you should know ], or if you are a little younger from New York, maybe it’s Supernatural vs Craig G. Alternatively if you are from the West Coast, it’s gonna be the KMEL battle of 18th November 1994. The night two of the Bay Areas’ Rap crews metaphorically went for the throat. The DJs were Prince Ice & Joe Quixx alongside Sway and Tech, and the winner was, well, that...

I've had this on the hard drive for a while after Mat sent it to me a few years back. It was labelled as a Scratch Perverts mix but the intro makes it clear its Mr Thing on the set, although maybe another SP member joins in later. There's a couple of occasions on this mix where Thing does his 'switch into a track that references/samples the one that's playing' trick. On this occasion it's The Biznizz into Resurrection and Shadowboxing into You Know My Steez. Neither of these trump my personal...

Dope early '85 episode of Chuck Chillout with Jerry "Jehri" Young on the mic. Highlights include cuts of the Fat Boys' "Stick 'Em" over top of Stevie, a nice mix of Whodini tracks, and a Roxanne Shanté KISS FM ID to lead into the then-new "Roxanne's Revenge." ? Roxanne, Roxanne... UTFO Airbreak (over Roxanne, Roxanne (Instrumental)... UTFO) Step Off... Grandmaster Melle Mel & The Furious Five Love Light In Flight... This episode of Mr. Magic's Rap Attack was recorded and shipped over to London for broadcast there a few days later (as the introduction notes) on Dave Pearce's BBC Radio London show.  At the end, Mr. Magic notes that he'll be hosting a New Edition concert on Sunday at Madison Square Garden, which ended up being the second in a series of "rampages" after R&B and hip-hop shows that year. By the end of the month, "[t]hirteen boys and young men were indicted ... on riot,...

For New Year’s Eve 1988, Eazy M and G finished up a classic year of hip-hop with a five-hour episode leading right up to midnight. Lots of guests in the studio, including Ministers of Black and Von Love. Lots of great airbreaks from this early episode of Club Krush. Sides C and D are missing, perhaps because they were stolen by guests of the show (something that’s mentioned during the episode). Side A Criminal Minded… Boogie Down Productions (in progress) ? (Instrumental) All Rappers Give...
