Coin Operated is the soul work of myself, Matt Dotson, Freshman at NIU. Everything from the concept to the packaging is of my own design and done myself. Instead of using this space to babble about my "style" of music, I will give my definition of music, which consequentaly permeates throughout my work much more then any particular "style". Music (that includes all sound) is a microcosmos: it's own landscape with it's own inhabitants created by it's own language. Through much experimentation I have arrived at the conclusion that there are very few general concepts which cannot be explained through music and/or sound - a wordless language. I work with large scale ideas (albums) composed of smaller parts (songs) which are built upon such a language. These songs, then, create the whole (album) which is greater then the sum of it's parts - a microcosmos.
Since my style, construction, and approach to a song change constantly depending upon the idea I am trying to convey, my music consists of a very large spectrum: from electronic to accoustic, simple to complex, organized to chaotic, music-orientated to noise-orientated, etc. The only constants in my music are strangeness, unexpectedness, intrigue, and a genuine desire to include the listener in this microcosmos. Thus, promoting him/her from simply and end-user to an active participant in my world.
The Phonographer, from which the audio samples on this page are from, is my first cd release. Being that it follows the format addressed above, it is basically impossible to get the concept of the entire album just by listening to a few songs. You can, however, get a feel for the diversity and strangeness of the music for it's own sake. If you are intrigued by these fragmentated glances into my world, I urge you to purchase a copy of the Phonographer for $5 at Hemispheres Music located on 1015 W Hillcrest Dr. in DeKalb. Or, just send me an email at SuJu456@aol.com and tell me what you think.
