Platinum Thoughts, which consists of Tinacious (Tinitra Holley), Manifest (Ron Winchester), Kelli B (Kelli Brown), Nicky P (Cheris Peebles), and J4Me (Deana Marshall), brings a vibe unmatched by any other hip hop group.
The group came together in Greensboro, NC through J4Me and Nicky P. J4Me was working at OBIA Studios and heard about Nicky winning a series of freestyling battles. She invited Nicky to the studio and they clicked so well that they recorded StakeOut that very night! J4Me quickly introduced Nicky to Manifest, whom she had already been working with, recognizing the lyrical talent in the two. Both Tinacious, who had already recorded a song with Nicky, and Kelli B, who was known musically for her vocal and poetic skills, came aboard through Nicky P, thus adding the final elements to this musical dynasty.
Their style is a distinctive blend of hip hop with a touch of R&B flavor, submerged in electrifying tracks overflowing with intricate lyrics. One could describe their music as anything but repetitive. J4Me, the group's BeatMaker who produced the album, states, One thing I can say is that our album is far from monotonous; no one song sounds like another. We packed this album with so much variety that everyone will like at least four tracks.
Platinum Thoughts first performed as a group in November 2001 in Washington, DC at a PSP Entertainment Talent Showcase. They lit up the stage with their single, LaidBack, which is a lounged out track featuring the females of the group. Platinum Thoughts scored the highest not only in the Hip Hop category but also in the entire showcase, reigning victorious over 26 other acts.
Soon after the showcase, Platinum Thoughts began to receive attention from local NC media. The group was invited to be on Greensboro's WJMH 102 Jamz Busta Brown AllStar Morning Show, where they performed LaidBack live. From there, they were featured guests on the WTWB 20's Busta Brown Show. In addition to their local media presence, Platinum Thoughts has appeared in local clubs, bars, and showcases throughout the Carolinas.
As the only male member, one would think that Manifest would feel misplaced amongst the four unique ladies. Quite the contrary, I don't feel uncomfortable at all about being the only male in the group, Manifest says, because I know that the ladies that are behind me can bring it just as hard, if not harder, than any male rapper.
Platinum Thoughts is definitely a group full of energy that is easily transferred to the crowd with each performance. Both critics and fans agree Platinum Thoughts is unmistakably the group that will wash away the industry's drought for hip hop groups.
