Swell Mob combines samples and electronics with live horns and guitar for a quirky pop-rock sound with hints of jazz, latin, electronica and hip-hop. The band features the powerful tenor vocals of Vayu O'Donnell backed by keyboardist/electronic guru Mike Espar, tenor saxman Seth Searls and trumpeter Tom Salvatore. On stage, the band's high-energy antics makes faces smile and back ends shake (NYC's "no dancing" laws notwithstanding). Or maybe vice-versa.
The members of The Mob are no strangers to the Northeast original rock scene. Mike Espar and Seth Searls spent the mid- to late-nineties recording and performing with New Haven, CT-based sextet Blue Fountain Diner. The band enjoyed regional success and built a loyal following from Boston to Washington, D.C.
With Swell Mob, the boys expand upon their funk-rock roots with drum loops, samples and electronics, veering towards a decidely more pop, vocal-driven, and layered sound.
