The stress distributions in rectangular plates with symmetrical uniform loads over central portions of two opposite edges are evaluated theoretically. Results are shown to be applicable to the stress analysis of a uniaxially loaded plate which is elastically constrained by an unloaded plate perpendicular to it. This structural configuration is often found in welded assemblies. A comparison of experimental results with theoretical results for a simple welded structure shows reasonable agreement.
