Great atmospherics, okay story line.
Best for 1950s Manhattan cinematography. Failing prize fighter falls for dancer, fights off her sleazy boss and his accomplices in some memorable sequences. Flat dialogue, no frills plot but the characters succeed in driving the action. A quantum leap in Kubrick's progress as a filmmaker.

Film Noir & crime
Early masterpiece by Stanley Kubrick (it was his second film). As the story quietly unfolds it keeps getting more dramatic and the depth of the caracters is amazing. Some bits have an almost painful lenght, howeverit's well worth it and the atmospheric. The impressions of New York in the 1950s are really unique - especially the chase over the roof-tops and the shabby alleys below.
