Slip-on ranks slide into the epaulet when unbuttoned and then is buttoned to hold the rank insignia place. Pinning on metal rank badges damages their uniform collars, epaulettes and lapels. Most air forces, armies and Navies worldwide employ slip-on ranks worn by other ranks and officers alike. These shown here are worn in Islamic nations.

During the Second World War the State Department of the United States Government had the Government Printing Office in Washington, District of Columbia print anti-German propaganda in the Spanish language for Latin-American nations in Central and South America as well as Mexico in order to influence the Spanish speaking people whom some were pro-German or were neutral at the least. Some nations in South America welcomed the German airmen, sailors and soldiers, often unofficially!

In 1948 the United States Army issued smaller chevrons to their enlisted personnel, they were reduced from 3-1/2" to 2-inches in width. Combat soldiers wore blue chevrons on yellow while non-combat troops wore yellow on blue. Needless to say many did not like the whole arrangement and in 1951 during the Korean War of 1951-1953, they reverted to their earlier wider chevrons which did not differentiate between combat and non-combat enlisted ranks.
