From 1841 to 1949 when the United States Navy moved rates from the number of stripes on their cuffs, and put one to three smaller diagonal stripes on the upper sleeve. Stripes on the collars also signified who was a seaman apprentice from a petty officer.

NOTA BENE:  These cap badges are "Museum Copy," made only for the United States Navy's Naval Historical Center at the Washington Navy Yard in the District of Columbia. They were manufactured to specifications of the original regulations. They have authentic gold and silver-wire bullion embroidery on black velvet backing. In 1866 the Navy of the United States issued printed patterns for petty officers as well as those sailors with special jobs such as Sailmakers, Coxswains, Boatswains, Master-At-Arms, Machinists, etc. Sailors had tailors embroider them or embroidered them their selves. These  were lightly tacked to the uniform sleeve and removed prior to laundering their soiled uniforms.

Petty Officer 3rd Class wore an eagle perched on a branch about their specialty mark atop two chevrons; Petty Officer 2nd Class wore same but with three chevrons below; Petty Officer 1st Class wor same as Petty Officer 2nd Class but with a red diamond below the eagle with the specialty mark embroidered over the diamond. These rates would have been worn from 1897 to 1905. Spanish-American War sailors would have worn rates like these. The eagle was modified on it's perch, otherwise they'd be like thse worn today.

Khaki cotton uniforms were adopted for wear by soldiers in the tropics and other hot weather climates in Cuba, the Philippines and Puerto Rico during and after the 1898 Spanish-American War and later in China as well during the Boxer Rebellion of 1899-1901. These epaulets came in the colours of the arms and branches of the U.S. Army, i.e., yellow for Cavalry, red for Artillery and white for Infantry, etc.

Aviation Pilots were started in 1924 and lasted until 1933 and reactivate in 1942 and abolished in 1948. Their specialty mark below the eagle was in yellow on both white and blue uniforms and from 1942 to 1948 they were yellow on the blue uniform and navy blue on whites. Some had straight wings while others has straight wings, who knows why? I do not know?
