Over the Edge Radio

Negativland

Over The Edge Radio Archive (Seeland 031). Negativland's live mix radio show "Over The Edge" has been the longest-running block of free-form audio collage in radio history. With Negativland's Don Joyce at the helm, the weekly show was broadcast from KPFA FM in Berkeley California from 1981 to 2015. His death on July 22, 2015 closed a very large and long chapter in the group's history.

I have already been summoned by KPFA to explain this program and why it doesn't follow the language rules of radio. Three solid hours of Eminem music and Eminem talk, some of it edited for language and some not, which in contrast certainly points out how language censorship mutilates the music of Eminem to ruination if nothing else. With constant reminders of this "parental guidance" format, we cover Eminem's career, the media controversy surrounding his emergence, the 2001 Grammy...

Over the Edge: The Blade Runner Remix. Originally aired in November of 1994 on KPFA radio. Runtime 3h:2m:20s. Upon discovering that Vangelis (maker of the theme music which begins every OTE) finally released his original soundtrack to Blade Runner, Scott Riddle hosts a 3 hour remix of the dialog from Blade Runner and all the original and associated music. This is one of my 3 all-time favorite movies and it provides a personally delightful playpen of disconnected sounds and plot. " Do you...

Over the Edge: Star Wars. Originally aired in October of 1986 on KPFA radio. Featuring Don Joyce. Runtime 3h:1m:10s. Technical note: First five minutes of the recording are muffled before moving to a clearer mix. The "What if they blow us up?" recording between talk show host "Ray" and a caller about the 'Star Wars' Defensive Shield (Ray is the same talk show host you hear in the track "Time Zones" on Negativland's "Escape from Noise" album) sets off a...

Our trio of guests play together without me for the first 45 minutes, then I join in the mix for the rest of the show. This is all an intense mashmix of The Beatles and everything they did in and out of music from beginning to end. Our sounds are made exclusively from Beatles material of all kinds and a few covers, including the amazing Rutles. A live and lively group mix that does not let up. -- Don Joyce

This large collection of skits and bits from Bob and Ray shows fills three hours with a minimum amount of mixing. And speaking of 50s Mixmasters, this is a good example of stuff available on the internet only, if you can find it. It's being made available there and if it wasn't, neither would this compilation radio show ever hit the airwaves, I sure didn't have this stuff and never would have, so if you like Bob and Ray on your midnight radio, you can thank all the culturally smart free...

This mix interweaves various show business dangers ranging from real circus acts to copyright hijinks. The Other Narrator presents the Peter Pan Story, brought in the form of C. Elliot Friday's 2-star version of Peter Pan (1938). We listen to a group of college kids, later children, later adults, as they follow the story through to Neverland and interspersed with stories from Peter Pan, Wendy and Peter, and many other sources. Flight patterns of Pan are tracked, receptacle programming interjects throughout, including an overly amorous Goofy attempting to attract the attention of Tinkerbell. As...

Close your eyes - this is such stuff as which dreams are made of. It's not "Over the Wedge", it's "Fire Walk With Me", a five-hour journey through the scenes, voices, and music of David Lynch. Thrown in are Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Dune... characters and sounds pervade throughout the night of seedy underbellies, breathless love, and mysterious backwards declarations. Babs...

Over the Edge: California Superstation. Originally aired in January of 1983 on KPFA radio. Runtime 3h:23m:44s. The California Super Station was Dick Vaughn's precursor programming to "Moribund Music Of The 70s." This is a combination of two CSS shows from '83 and '84. Although Dick's OTE CDs have all the records edited out, this is how it was done on the air with all the 70s cuts played in their entirety. The radio point here was to "convince" KPFA listeners that the station...

Shadows and fear, dames and darkness, and a long drive to redemption that falls from grace twice as fast. It's Film Noir at Over the Edge, an honest classic. The start of this episode, "The UFO Show", appears to be cut off in this recording; it begins in the middle of an interview about alien visitation. It seems to be the first episode of what became the "Another UFO" series. "Over the Edge" becomes "The Haunted Edge" as Don speaks from beyond the grave, electrocuted by a toaster, and offers "five hours to kill together". This mid-July show moves into a world (and afterworld) of the macabre, creepy and just plain strange. Blended together are stories by Poe, Lovecraft, Dickens, and a remarkably obscure sci-fi-horror work ("Cancrogregina") from the 1950s by Italian writer Tommaso Landolfi. By the end of his career, he was talking almost exclusively about his own legal problems which, while tedious to some at the time, now...

This sounds bad! This sounds good! Don indicates that this week's episode is a huge test and that next week will be a "real show", but that's just humility, because "The Sound Effects Show" is a multi-hour delve into the very nature of sound and sound effects. Libraries of sound effects clash with science recordings about waveforms and lessons on how animals sound in nature. Cries, shrieks, voices and musical instruments are slowed up and sped up to show you what's going on....
