My name is Matt Brotherton. I'm a stuggling author just getting started. Each week, I share a piece of my journey to try and encourage others on their own path. There are no hot tricks or tips here.   This week, I’m talking about my depression, absence, and all the brain garbage that goes with it. Episode Script: My name is Matt Brotherton. I’m an indie author struggling to get started in his career. Each episode, I talk about my journey from obscure to awesome. This is the New Writer podcast. #Episode 84 – Where the Heck Have You Been? It’s been a month since I recorded a podcast and about five weeks since one was published. It’s been about the same since I put a short story...

Episode Script: If you are like me, you probably listen to a number of podcasts about indie publishing. There are a ton of them. Dozens of them are great. Some of them are considered absolutely essential listening for all indie authors. But, the podcast-o-sphere, like the blog-o-sphere and the 24-hour-cable-news-…o-sphere… are echo chambers. “The Audience” is a vague, amorphous entity and it hungers for content. It needs its regular feedings or it will turn and feed on the only thing it...

Episode 82 – Is Everyone Laughing at Me? Episode Script: As writers, we spend time mastering the techniques necessary to reroute our reader’s mental plumbing so the pipes dump their emo-juices exactly where we want. The greatest writers are true maestros, playing the whole range of feelings like an expert violinists. And, some of us—like me—are the literary equivalent of a pop rock band. We only know four chords and that’s all we’ll ever need, dang it! The irony of it all is our own...

Links in this episode: John L Monk’s Hell’s Children My Bradbury Challenge Story List     I definitely have crutches as a writer. For example, my first instinct when I’m coming up on my short story deadline is to just write a murder scene. I’m not going to get into what that says about my psychology, it just is what it is. Early on in the Bradbury Challenge, though, I decided I wouldn’t let myself rely on my crutches. The entire point was to stretch my creative muscles. I’m...

I am bad as schedules. Timelines. Deadlines. “Getting things done” I’m just not very good at any of it. I get filled with bursts of hyper-powered mojo and crank out ridiculous amounts of work in a very short period of time… Then, I collapse into my own, personal Odinsleep. Time management is definitely not my strong suit. I keep trying. I keep setting deadlines and building schedules. I work really hard to stick to them. I know they would be beneficial to me if I could get myself to...

Not the greatest month, but not the worst, either. I’ve been re-evaluating goals and trudging along. Words for March – 36,983, bringing my yearly total to 83,073, so not quite the 91,000 I was hoping to be at. That’s okay. I think I’m going to catch it an pass it again in April. Book sales weren’t great this month, but there is a silver lining. Kobo made up 1/3 of my sales and income this month. Book Amazon Kobo Free Royalties Choices 2 0 67 $0.67 Fallout 3 1 0 $8.07 Summons 0 1 0...

This week’s writing advice books: The 30-Day Author by Kevin Tumlinson The Plot Machine by Dale Kutzera   The 30-Day Author This is a great book for building a daily writing habbit. If you’re anything like me, the old advice of “sit down and write” isn’t working for you. Kevin Tumlinson goes into some specific techniques of what to write and why. There’s some sneakyness here that will also get you thinking about larger goals as a writer.   The Plot Machine I really enjoyed the...

2015 Word Count I am too lazy to break the wordcount down by project, although I could break it down by at work vs at home. I am instead going to take the easy route and use my Grammarly Insights to define my wordcount for 2015. 2015 Sales Report Books Read I managed to pull off reading 163 books in 2015. I am going to go for 200 in 2016. Reading makes us brainer and better writers. If you would like to follow along with the books I read, join me on Goodreads.

This week I learned a few valuable lessons: * If a book promo site can be submitted to through automation, don’t get your hopes up for success. * Dynasty Warriors is available on Steam, and that means large chunks of life might dissappear on you. * Sometimes, you can get a lot done by switching to something else. I’m less than 10k words away from finishing NaNoWriMo and have 3 days to go. I think I can, I think I can.   I’ll see you next week from the winner’s circle. -Matt

Dear Writer, I’m tired. I’m really tired. It’s been a long week at the tail end of a longer month. Work has stretched into endless hours of mind-breaking labor. It takes intense concentration and I find myself lost in the shuffle far too often. I’m exhausted, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop anytime soon. Have you ever felt that tired? That worn to the breaking point? Have you ever felt like you just need to see it all through? God knows this isn’t the first time for...

Questions and Answers (September 2015) This is the first Q&A Episode of NWP, and so I really just wanted to start off by answering questions I get asked pretty frequently. These are my answers to things, so please, remember your mileage may vary and take all advice with a grain of salt.     The Four Questions I answer: How do I overcome writer’s block? How do I create a plot? What advice do you have for aspiring authors? Do you want to join a writing competition/write this book for me?

August was a good month for me in sales. I doubled my royalties from July. Writing… not so much. I really struggled on finishing the first draft of the Space Opera and needed to sit down and spend some time figuring out why. I also had my eyes opened to the need for a proofreader for my work, and am in the process of contacting proofreaders to try and build a relationship. As for the monthly update, you can get the details after the break. Wordcount for August: 71,998 Total Words * Space...

Dear Writer, Why do you write? This is the quintessential question every writer needs to ask themselves. In fact, if you don’t have an answer, I suggest coming up with one now. People are going to ask you. They will probably ask you this question as often as they ask you how you come up with ideas. Of course, no answer you give is going to actually going to provide an insight into the world of writing. It’s incredibly personal. The answer is different for each of us, but I think it is...

This week marks the one-year anniversary of New Writer Podcast. The last year has been… something. The show has struggled to find its footing while I was going through very similar growing pains. It very nearly died, and I have to admit, so did my writing career. The reasons were not unrelated. I had this idea in my head of what I wanted my writing career to be, and I had an idea in my head of what I wanted this show to be. Neither were panning out exactly the way I had dreamed. I got...

The Weekly Update Writing: I’ve been seriously slacking this week. It isn’t a matter of motivation or dedication, either. I’ve just had some really crappy word count days. I’ve been getting up at butt crack early to write, which is what has kept me floating, but most night’s I’ve eaten dirt after work. I have managed to keep my 750 words streak going and am currently sitting at 45 days without missing. Non-Fiction: 8040 Space Opera: 4901 Other: 6981 Total: 19,922 Book Sales: I’m...

The Weekly Update: Sales: Sales have been steady, for me. I put the Alcohologist Chronicles into KDP Select and have set the books into a rotation of free days. Since we haven’t sold any of this book, it felt like a no-brainer. It hasn’t been a tremendous success or anything, but some people have downloaded the first three books, so we’ll see if that makes any kind of difference.
